Cingulate cortex
The cingulate cortex is a key part of the limbic system and is located above the corpus callosum. It forms connections to the limbic thalamic nuclei, subiculum, entorhinal cortex, motor and premotor areas. It consists of two parts called the anterior cingulate cortex and the posterior cingulate cortex. The cingulate cortex has been shown to play a role in memory retrieval and selective attention. Moreover, it serves a function in the regulation of autonomic functions, somatic functions and emotional responsiveness. Lesions in the cingulate cortex cause indifference to pain.
