Cerebral cortex (neopallium)
The cerebral cortex is the gray matter that overlies the cerebral hemispheres that play a role in higher order functions. The convoluted structure provides it with greater surface area. The neocortex makes up the majority of the cortex and has 6 layers with distinct cell types and functions. The primary cortices receive sensory input while the association cortices have complex functions such as memory, language, judgement etc.
