Today we are at the Zhotön Festival, which takes place in the month of August.
  • This is one of the most important festivals for the inhabitants of Lhasa. It is a great social occasion and when many people come [uh] to celebrate this occasion.
  • The festival is called Zhotön, which means the Yogurt Festival. It marks the end of the summer and the beginning of the performance of Tibetan opera.
  • The central part of this [uh] ritual is the unfurling of the very large tangka or representation of Buddha Shakyamuni--that's what we're seeing here.
  • And after the tangka is unfurled, the pilgrims come and make offerings to the thangkha by throwing on the tangka white scarves as a sign of welcome and devotion
  • [horns play in background] [crowd sounds]
  • You can hear in the background the trumpets which participate in this festive occasion.
  • [trumpet noises] [crowd noises]
  • The inhabitants of Lhasa are quite enthusiastic about this festival and here is what one of the inhabitants told us on that day.

The festival was established by the fifth Dalai Lama, at least this is how one of the sources presents it.
  • Here we see the monastery of Drepung in the background behind the cloud of smoke of the juniper tree, which are made as offerings.
  • The festival I was saying was started by the fifth Dalai Lama, in celebration of the establishment of his state, the Ganden Podrang, as the official Tibetan government in the seventeenth century.
  • The unfurling of the great tangka came later, however. It seems to have been started by the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso.
  • As we can see on the picture, there is a great crowd at this fesitval. This is an important occasion in the social calendar of Lhasa people, and they all come here to witness the unfurling of the tangka and have picnic, then go back to Lhasa.
