A local elder, Jampel, gives historic background information on Golok Khanggen and the four tribes of Barzhi. The community started when fifty to sixty farmer families migrated to Golok three to four generations ago. Jampel introduces the leaders of that time, how they settled and began herding, the challenges they faced, their relationships with neighboring nomads, their mutual support, and the development of their traditions and customs. He compares past and present nomad lands, the changes in sheepherding, the past and present conditions and customs, the changes in their living, diet, dress, and other extraordinary and unique traditions of Golok Barzhi people.
