Inheritance

Bhutan has different cultures of inheritance. Among the religious nobilities, the main house and the properties are often bequeathed to one son and the other siblings move out to start new families or as a spouse for the inheritor of another house. Most middle class families practice a matrilineal system whereby the property is passed down through a daughter. The other siblings contribute to the daughter to sustain the family property. In some case, the main inheritor receives the main property and estate while others receive a small share, such as a plot to build a house on. In rare cases, the properties are divided equally among the beneficiaries. Today, the inheritance culture is changing with new inheritance laws.
