Cookies

Bhutanese women make a wide range of cookies from wheat and rice flour to be used in ceremonial offerings or as snacks to be served with tea. The wheat flour is mixed with water, baking powder, butter and sugar, and kneaded in a soft dough, which is then rolled into thin round sheets. This is then fried in hot oil. The dough is often cut into small pieces and various shapes and designs made from the pieces. Sometimes, the rice and wheat dough are coloured before making the designs and then fried to produce colourful cookies. Some cookies are associated with specific rituals and festivals while others are produced for daily use.
