Yangzom from Bongo Gewog (county) in Chukha district, recites different ballads and each one contains many metaphors to convey a message, to make it more poetic and lyrical in order to win over the crowd (such a ballad is usually somewhat of a competition between the two speakers involved). During the old days people would recite ballads when they work in the field or during any leisure time. People with intelligent speaking skills composed their own ballads according to whatever situation they were in and they choose this as the means of communicating their thoughts and feelings. They insult, express love and sadness through ballads. The ballads can be short or long but it is not sung with tunes like tsangmo (a folk literary composition popular in central and eastern Bhutan). Hence depending on the people who recite it, they make their own tune as per their accents. Ballads are widely practiced in the eastern parts of the country.
