The Bhutanese tax system was very strict, with every household paying tax in various forms, including monk tax or labour tax, during the time of the Desi system of government. In this song, Gelong (monk) Zhenpai Dawa became a monk to avoid punishment imposed on his parents. He did not have interest to become a monk, and the rules in the Dzong were extremely strict. The verses of the song also give some brief description of Punakha Dzong, where the male and female river passes beside the Dzong is his residence. Thus, the song is a sad song as the author of the song became monk by compulsion.
