One of the most traditional settings for the performance of lozey ballads are Bhutanese mud houses construction sites. At those sites, workers perform lozey ballads mainly to entertain themselves. They might compete against each other in the performance; sometimes they might also lure the passersby into participating in their competition. In this video, Rinzin Dem performs “On the Slope of the Red Hill” (Gangmar Tre Gang Gi Kepar), an antagonizing ballad that uses indirect language to make offensive remarks. The verses express disdain regarding expensive and attractive garments, and other symbols of external beauty. No matter how beautiful and well-dressed a person can be, the ballad says, the true love between the two people is what really matters.
