The Subbas are a people that resides in high altitude areas of Bhutan. The narrator tells a story of a Subba who tried to learn about paddy plantations but initially misunderstood the process of cultivation. One day this Subba was passing by a group of Bhawans - another ethnic Bhutanese people - busy with rice cultivation. He had never seen rice cultivation before; the traditional method for cultivating rice is to flood the fields while setting the young seedlings. He thought they were playing in the mud like pigs and started scolding them. After harvesting, the Bhawans prepared a meal that included rice with a delicious curry, and they invited the Subba as well. At first, he refused to eat, but they kept insisting so eventually he ate. He ate the entire dish. Afterwards, he asked how the dish was made, so the Bhawans taught him the whole process of cultivation.

One day the Subba came riding on a horse to the lower part of the valley when the Bahun were were covered in mud as they were busy working in the fields. Some were planting the seedlings, some leveling the land (soil), moreover everyone was assigned with various work. Upon seeing them Subba sahib said “what are you all doing? why are you all playing in the mud like a pig? during the time of Dassain, you all will have nothing to eat but be sick” saying this he left.

After the paddies were harvested, Subba came back again. Bahuns said “You told us what not during the times of harvesting. We were called as pig for working in a mud. we will offer you food with rice which was harvested in our field.” and they prepared a meal with with rice, curry, dal and other side dishes. Then they offered it to Subba sahib. Subba said “will you really give me food? Will you be in a position of treating me a meal?” “Yes! we can. Please have it” said the Bahuns.

they offered him the food and once the food arrived he kept staring at the food and found it like the food of an ants as thr rice were very small. “am I going to eat this rice? I don’t eat foods which were eaten by an ants” said Subba and Bahun responded saying “No sahib. Last time you insulted us by saying why are we playing like this and you too said that sickness and famine would come and we wont be able to eat. At that moment we were actually doing paddy cultivation. For this we were working and this is the end result so this is edible.”

Subba again asked them “is it even edible?” and in responded the Bahuns said yes to him. He ate the food and found it very delicious. Therefore he asked the Bahuns to make the same thing for him immediately. And baun said “No sahib! It won’t work like this. We have to make a drain, bring the water, then preparation of field, flooding of field, plantation of the seedlings and do the same procedures which we did last time so only after that it will work.” And after that Subba asked the Bhauns to come and help him with this whole procedure quickly and left their home after eating food. And the lesson which we get from this story is that Subba were not aware of this whole paddy cultivation thing.
