Rinchen Wangdi, a local elder from Kaktong in Zhemgang, tells the story of an old woman who refused to recite the mantra of Avalokiteshvara. To rectify this, her son, Guru Tshewang Dhendup, hung a bell on the door and struck a deal with his mother, making her promise to recite the mantra every time she hit the bell. The mother, however, would always walk through the door carefully to avoid ringing the bell. Occasionally, she would hit the bell while in hurry, or not being mindful. Whenever she hit the bell, she would say, "Guru Tshewang Dhendup Om Mani Padme Hung," shouting the name of her son in irritation for being forced to recite the mantra. This story is told in many places across Bhutan, although the names and circumstances change. For example, while the story here starts straight away with a description of how the son bargains with his mother, other versions begin by telling of the story with a description of the mother as being rude and unjust, then finishing with a description of how she is reborn in a harsh hell realm due to her bad character.
