An animal story commonly heard in the Kheng area of Zhemgang carries the message that one should strive to build up one’s own capabilities in order to be as independent as possible in relation to others. In the story, a tortoise wants to eat fruit, and so it begs a monkey to help it climb on a tree. After persistent requests, the monkey helps the tortoise climb the tree, but refuses to help it down. Stuck in the tree, the tortoise asks several animals for help. In the end, an elephant comes to its rescue. Another version of this story also heard in the region concludes with the tortoise taking revenge on the monkey.

- ཏ་རིན་ Tarinག་འདི་སྨོ?Which one is it?
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomད་་་ རུས་སྦལ་དང་སྤྱ་ ལྟོ་ཚང་བསྡོམས་ཏེ་ ཚལ་ནང་ རག་རོ་སློང་སྡོད་སྡོད་མ།Now, tortoise and monkey, they became friends. And then they were....... in the forest.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomསྤྱ་ཨ་པ་འདི་ ཡར་ཤིང་གུ་ རྡོག་མ་བཟའ་བར་ འགྱོ་འགྱོཝ་ཨིན་པས་ཏེ།Monkey went on the top of a tree to eat bettlenut.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomལྟོ་ཚང་ང་ལུ་ ཨ་ནཱི་ རྡོག་མ་འཚོ་འཚོཔ་སྦོམ་འདི་ ང་ལུ་གནང་ས་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས། ཨ་ནཱི་ཡ་ འ་ནཱི་འདི་ ང་ར་བཟའ་ནི་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས་(སྤྱ་གིས་)Tortoise said, "Can you give me the ripened bettlenut"? But monkey replied I want to eat it.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཀྭ་ལས་ ཡར་གྱི་སྦོ་འདི་ ང་ལུ་གནང་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས་ རུས་སྦལ་གྱིས། ཨ་ནཱི་ཡང་ ང་ར་བཟའ་ནི་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས།Tortoise said, "Can you give me the above punch to me"? Again, monkey replied, this also I want it.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨའེ་ཁྱོད་ར་ བཟའ་བ་ཡར་ཤོག་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་ཨིན་ལོ་ སྤྱ་གིས། ཁྱོད་ང་ལེན་པར་ ཐོན་འོང་ག་ཟེརཝ་མས་ལོ། ཤོག་ང་ལེན་པར་ཐོན་འོང་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས་ལོ་ སྤྱི་གིས།Do come by yourself to eat it. Monkey replied, I will come to grab you. I will come to grab you. Come on! I will come to grab to you.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomའེང་ཟེར་ དེ་ལས་ རུས་སྦལ་འདི་ སྤྱ་གིས་ འབག་ཡར་སོངཔ་ཨིན་པས་ ཡར་ཤིང་ཁར།Tortoise agreed. Then later monkey was carried on the top of a tree.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomདེ་ལས་ ལངས་ལངམ་ཨིན་པས། རུས་སྦལ་ཡང་ལངས་ལངསམ་ཨིན་པས། སྤྱ་ཡང་ལངས་ཏེ་འབབ་བབས་མས། བབས་ཞིནམ་ལས་ དེ་ལས་Then, they were sufficient bettlenut. Even tortoise was sufficient with the it.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomསྤྱ་འདིནི་་་དིང་ཡ་ཟེར་ མཆོངས་འགྱོ་འགྱོཝ་མས། རུས་སྦལ་འདི་ ལུས་སོང་མས་ཏེ།Later, monkey jumped from the tree. But tortoise was leaved behind.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomདབའེ་ཨ་ཙི་བསྒུགས་ས་ཟེརཝ་མས་ལོ་ རུས་སྦལ་གྱིས། ང་ཡང་འགྱོ་ནི་ཏེ་ཟེརཝ་ད་ སྤྱ་གིས་ ཡ་ཁྱོད་རྡོག་མ་བཟའ་ནི་ལོ་མེན་ན་ཏེ་ ཟེར་སླབ་སླབ་མས། ཁྱོད་ར་རྡོག་མ་བཟའ་སྟེ་སྡོད་མས། ང་ར་འགྱོ་བའི་ཟེར་ བཀོ་བཞག་བཞགཔ་མས་ལོ།Tortoise told to monkey, do wait for me. I want to go as well. But monkey replied that you want to eat the bettlenut, so you keep on eating it. Monkey told now, I am going and tortoise was left behind.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨའེ་་་ བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་ ད་ང་ག་དེ་སྦེ་འབབ་ན་སྨོ་ཟེར་ སེམས་ཅན་ཚུ་ག་ར་ བཀུག་བཀུག་ཨིན་ལོ་ཁོ་གིས། ཨ་ནཱི་རུས་སྦལ་གྱིས།Oh my god! Now, what am I going to do? All animals were
- ཏ་རིན་ Tarinཨིན་ན?Is it?
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨིན། ཨའེ་ང་ཟེར་ དེ་བསྒང་འགོ་དང་པ་ར་ ཀ་ཤ་ཨཔ་གཅིག་འོང་དེས་ལོ། བླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ་ ང་ཕབ་གནང་དབའེ་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས།Yes. Its me. That time firstly, a barkin deer came. Tortoise said, Oh my god!, do help me to get down.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomང་ལས་སྦོམ་མི་ མི་འོང་དོ་སྨ་རས་ཟེར་ ང་གིས་འདི་ མི་ཤེས་ཟེར་ བཀོ་བཞག་བཞགཔ་མས་ཏེ་ ཀ་ཤ་གིས་ཡང་།Now bigger than me, man was coming. Even, barking deer told, I do not know. And then deer went.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཧེང་་་ དེ་ལས་ ཕགཔ་འོང་དེས་ལོ། དེ་གིས་ཡང་ཡར་སོངཔ་མས་ལོ། ཨའེ་ང་ཕབ་བཞག་གནང་དབའེ་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས་ལོ་ ད་རུང་ མཁྱེན་ནོ་ང་ལས་སྦོམ་མི་ མི་འོང་དོ་གོ་ཟེརཝ་མས་ལོ། སེམས་ཅན་ཧ་ལམ་ཅིག་གིས་ར་ བཀོ་བཞག་ཡི་ལོ་ རུས་སྦལ་དེ།Then, pig came. Even, pig went away. Tortoise asked to help him to get down.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཡར་ཤིང་གུ་ར་སྡོད་ཅི་ལོ་ ཨའེ་་་་ ད་ག་དེ་སྦེ་འབད་ན་སྨོ། ང་དབའེ་ཟེར་ སྡོད་པའི་བར་ན་ ཡུདཔ་ཐེངས་ཅིག་ལས་ ང་བཅས་རའི་ ཨ་ནཱི་ཤཝ་དེ་ཚུ་ གནམ་ས་མེད་འོང་དེས་ལོ། ང་བཏོན་བཞག་གནང་དབའེ་ཟེར་ སླབ་ཅི་ལོ་ ད་རུང།Tortoise was again left behind. Now what should I do. When tortoise was sitting like that, after a few moment deers were coming. Tortoise requested to help him to get down.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomབླ་མ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། ང་བཅས་ལས་སྦོམ་པའི་ མི་འོང་དོ་སྨ་རས་ཟེར་ སླབ་སྟེ་ དེ་སྦེ་ར་བཀོ་བཞག་བཞགཔ་མས།Oh my god! Bigger than us, man were coming. With this, again tortoise was left behind.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomད་གླངམོ་ཆེ་འོང་འོངམ་ཨིན་པས་ཏེ། དབའེ་ཨ་ཞང་གླངམོ་ཆེ་ ང་ཕབ་བཞག་གནང་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས། གླངམོ་ཆེ་གིས་ ཁྱོད་འབད་མ་ཚུགས་ཅི་ར་ ག་ཅི་སྦེ་ ཡར་འཛེག་ཅི་ཏེ་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས།Then, elephant came. Again, tortoise asked to elephant to help im to get down, But yet elephant also did not help him.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomའདྲི་བ་དཔྱད་དཔྱདཔ་མས་ཏེ་ གླངམོ་ཆེ་གིས། ང་ཤིང་གུ་ སྤྱ་གིས་ བཀོ་བཞག་བཞགཔ་ཨིན། ང་ལུ་ རྡོག་མ་གནང་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་ཨིན། དེ་འབདཝ་ད་ ཁོ་གིས་ འབག་འོང་མ་བཏུབ། ང་ར་ཡར་བཟའ་བར་ཤོག་ཟེར་ སླབ་དེས། དེ་འབདཝ་ད་ ང་ཤིང་ཁར་ར་བཀོ་བཞག་དའི་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས།Elephant asked a question. Tortoise answered I was left behind by a monkey. I told monkey to give me bettlenut. But, he did not bring. So, I was asked to climb and eat by myself. However, later I was left behind.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomགླངམོ་ཆེ་གིས་ ད་ཁྱོད་འབབ་ནི་ཨིན་ན་ཏེ་ཟེར་ འདྲི་དྲིཝ་མས། མེ་མེ་སེམས་ཅན་གྱིས་འདི་ སྐད་ར་མ་རྐྱབ་པས།Then, elephant asked tortoise, now you want to get down.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomགླངམོ་ཆེ་གིས་ ཕབ་ཕབ་མས་ཏེ་ ཡ་ཨ་ནཱ་ཟེར་ ཨ་ན་ཱ (ཨེ་ཙི་གུ) མཆོངས་པ་ཅིན་ ང་ཤི་འོང་མས། ཨ་ནཱི་ཁ་ཐུག་ མཆོངས་མས་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས།Elephant helped tortoise to get down. Elephant told to jumped but tortoise replied I would die. It would be better to jumoed that side.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomགཡསཔ་དང་ གཡོནཔ་ཡོད་མེན་ན་ ང་བཅས་ལུ་ ནཱ་སྒལ་ཏོ་ཁར་ བྱཱག་བཏང་མཆོངས་སྨ་རས་ཟེར་ སླབ་སླབ་མས། དེ་འབདཝ་ད་ ཁོ་གིས་(རུས་སྦལ་གྱིས་) སྒལ་ཏོ་ཁར་མེན་པ་ ཨེ་ཙི་གུ་ མཆོང་མཆོངསཔ་ཨིན་པས་ཏེ།We have right and left side, so jump on back. But, tortoise did not jump on the back rather jumped on.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨཱ་་་ དེ་ལས་ གླང་པོ་ཆེ་དེ་ ཤི་སོངཔ་མས་ཏེ།Then, elephant was dead.
- ཏ་རིན་ Tarinཨཱ་འ་འ།Oh!
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomདེ་འབདཝ་ད་ འ་ནཱེམ་ཅིག་ར་ཨིན་པས། ད་རུང་ ཀང་ཀུ་ལ་(བྱ་ཀང་ཀུ་ལ་)གི་ ཕོརཝ་ཕྱེད་ཀ་བཟའ་ ཕྱེད་ཀ་མ་བཟའ། རྫོགས་སོང་ཡི་ད། ཡ་ཁྱོད།Now, that is all. Again, monkey eat half of the body. Now, its over.
- ཞིབ་འཚོལ་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་དབང་ཕྱུག་ Researcher Yeshi Wangchukཨ་ནཱི་སྲུང་འདི་ མཇུག་ཐོན་སོང་ཡི་སྨོ?Now, did the story came to an end.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨ།Yeah!
- ཞིབ་འཚོལ་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་དབང་ཕྱུག་ Researcher Yeshi Wangchukཨ་ནཱེམ་ཅིག་ར་ཨིན་པས་མེན་ན་ མ་པ་ལས་ར།That is all, right.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨིན་འ་ནཱེམ་ཅིག་ར།Yeah! That is all.
- ཞིབ་འཚོལ་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་དབང་ཕྱུག་ Researcher Yeshi Wangchukཡ་ཡ།Ok, ok.
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomག་ཅི་རོགས་མཇུག་ར་ ཨིན་ནི་ཨིན་མས། ཀང་ཀུ་ལ་གི་ ཕོརཝ་ཕྱེད་ཀ་བཟའ་ ཕྱེད་མ་བཟའ་ཟེར་མི་འདི།Now, that's the end. Monkey( kangkula) ate half of the body and other hald was left behind.
- ཞིབ་འཚོལ་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་དབང་ཕྱུག་ Researcher Yeshi Wangchukཨ་ནཱི་འདི་ སྲུང་བཏང་ཚརཝ་ད་ སླབ་དགོཔ་ཨིན་ན?So, when story came to an end, do we have to tell it?
- དཀར་འཛོམས་ Karzomཨིན་ཨ་ནཱི་འདི། མ་པ་ལས་ར་སླབ་དགོ་ཏེ།That's it. It has to be told.

This virtue is promptly by myself. Though, it is fulfill by great noble, without leaving behind any sentient being. This would be from religious context. In the story, it is the half of the body left eaaten by monkey( Kangkula).
