Churpu from Guyum village in Pemagatshel district narrates the story of an elephant and a cowboy Totpa. The art of storytelling of Bhutanese folktale is part of Bhutanese tradition and culture. The story is non-fiction, it happened in the village 48 years ago. Once a cow herder lost his cow named Zo-Jaan and went into the forest in search of it. It was evening and his vision was limited. An elephant was sleeping in a bush and thinking it was his cow, he hit the elephant with a stick. From then on he became famous in the community for being able to hit an elephant.

    Ok. My name is Churpu. I am going to tell a story about an elephant.

    ཏེ་ད་ལྟོ་ གླངམོ་ཆེ་གི་སྲུང་ལུ་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ དང་ཕུ་ང་བཅས་མར་ རྒྱ་གར་ལུ་ནོར་འབག་སོངམ་ད་ལུ་ལགས། མར་བཙོ་ཁི་ཟེར་ས་ལུ་ ནོར་འབག་སོངམ་ད་ལུ་ ཏེ་འ་ནཱ་ལུ་ ནོར་གཅིག་བྱང་ད་ཡི་ལགས།
    Long ago when we took our cattle to Tsho-khe, a cow got lost.

    རྒྱ་ཚ་མིན་གཅིག་ མིང་བཟོ་རྒྱན་ ཟེར་སླབ་ཨིན་ལགས། ཏེ་འ་ནཱི་བྱང་སྦེ་ འཚོལ་བར་འགྱོཝ་ད་ལུ་ གནམ་བསྲོ་ཁམས་ཅིག་ནང་ ཏེ་ད་ཨ་ནཱི་གླངམོ་ཆེ་ཉལ་སྡོད་མི་འདི་ ང་གི་ནོར་ཨིན་པས་ཟེར་ དེ་ནང་ཤིང་གཅིག་བཏོག་ཞིན་ན་ རྟས་ཐག་དྲངས་བཏངམ་ད་ལུ་ ཏེ་ད་གླངམོ་ཆེ་སྡོད་ཡོདཔ་ལས་ ལོང་སྟེ་རྟིང་བདའ་འོངམ་ད་ལུ་ ཁོ་བྱོག་འོང་ཡི་ཟེར་ཨིན།
    It was a Jatsamin (Breed Type) named Zo-Jaan. During the search, it was evening so, vision was not clear. An elephant was sleeping in the bush and thinking it was his cow, he hit the elephant with a stick. The elephant then chased him and he ran away.

    While he reached at his friends, he told them that he beat an elephant but they did not believe. He beat the elephant by mistake thinking it was his cow?

    Yes. They did not believe him. The next day elephant went to Dungsam Rishor where there was Guarding house in the field because of the grudge.

    Later, they knew that Totpa have hit the elephant and because of that it caused damage. The villagers of Dungsam blamed him and caught him.

    Oh! cowboy totpa.

    དེ་ལས་ཨ་ནཱ་ལས་ བར་ན་བཙུགསཔ་ད་ལུ་ ནོར་རྫིཔ་ཆ་རོགས་ཚུ་ངལ་རངས་ནུག ཡ་ ང་གིས་དྲངས་ཡི་ ཟེར་སླབ་ཅི་མེན་ན་ ཏེ་ཁྱོད་ཚུ་གིས་མ་དྲངསམ་འོང་ཟེར་སླབ་དེས་མེན་ན་ ད་བར་མི་ལྷོད་ཅི་མེན་ན་ཟེར་སླབ་ད་ ནོར་རྫིཔ་ཆ་རོགས་ཚུ་ངལ་རངས་རངསམ་ཨིན་པས།
    Yes. When his friends came to know about it they believed and were proud of him. He said, "You all did not believe when I told you but see, now I am caught because of it."

    དེ་ལས་ དྲངས་དྲངསམ་གཏན་གཏན་ཨིན་པས་ རོགས་བར་མི་ལྷོདཔ་མས་ཟེར་ དེ་ལས་ང་བཅས་ཚུ་ག་ཅི་འབད་བ་ཅིན་དྲག་ག་ཟེར་ ཁོང་ནོར་རྫིཔ་ཆ་རོགས་ཚུ་བསྟུན་གྲོས་འབདཝ་ད་ལུ་ དེ་ལས་རྐྱངམ་ཅིག་ ཨ་ནཱ་ལས་ད་རུང་ ཡ་ཁྱོད་ཆ་ཁྱབ་སོང་ ནོར་རྫིཔ་ཆ་རོགས་ གླངམོ་ཆེ་དྲངས་མི་ཏོད་པའུ་ཟེར་མི་གིས་ ང་གིས་གླངམོ་ཆེ་དྲངས་ཚུགསཔ་ད་ལུ་ ཁོང་གིས་ ཡོམ་ཕེ་(ཤ་ཁྱིམ་)འདི་ ང་གིས་བཟོ་ཚུགས། ཏེ་ང་བཟུམ་སྦེ་གླངམོ་ཆེ་ཚར་གཅིག་དྲངས་བལྟ་ ཟེར་སླབ་ ཁོང་མི་དམངས་ཚུ་ ཟེར་བཏང་་བཏངམ་མས།
    His friends coming to know the turth and then decided to do something. Then Totpa said, "You all go and tell them that when I can beat an elephant, I can definitely repair their guard house. If they can then, anyone of them can dare to beat an elephant like I did."

    Yes. They were sent there. The cowboys told the Dungsam citizen as they were told by the Totpa.

    Hearing what Totpa said, the villagers came into a discussion thinking that if he alone

    Yes. the villager could not do it. The Dungsam villagers approached Totpa with a dead pig, alcohol and rice, accepting that they lost and he won.

    He was from Loung-kholom. He stayed there. It was sure that he did it. The owner of the Guard-house was a Dungsam Rishorpa (Name of the place). It happened during the Tsho-khe. The people at the Dungsam river side was known as Rishorpa. It it true that he won and they lost.
