Video Overview
Karpola of Bongo Gewog (county) in Chukha district, narrates a ghost story about a man called Khuru who was said to be killed by Indians when he went to steal beetle nuts from the southern parts of Bhutan. He was murdered after which his spirit wandered around his friends and family. Storytelling had been one of the widely practiced traditions in all the parts of the country. It was practiced at bed time and mostly after dinner when the family sat near the fire. The elders of the family narrate different genres of stories to their children to entertain them, educate them and mostly to teach them the reality of life through stories.

- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaདང་ཕུ་དུང་ཕུ་ལུ་ཨིན་མས་མར་ སྔོན་མོ་ཨརཝ་བརྐུ་དགོ་པས་པ་སྟེ་ ཨརཝ་བརྐུ་བར་སོང་དཔག་བསམ་ཁར་འགྱོ་འགྱཝ་མས་ཨརཝ་བརྐུ་བར་ རྡོམ་ཨརཝ་བརྐུ་བར་ མར་འགྱོ་Long time ago, during a time when people were stealing things, some robbers went to steal betel nut in Pasakha .
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaམར་ལས་ཨརཝ་མ་འཐོབ་ ད་ལུ་ཅིག་ཨརཝ་འཐོབ་ ལ་ལུ་ཅིག་ཨརཝ་མ་འཐོབ་ རྒྱ་གར་གྱི་བདའ་ཟུན་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་སླབ་གཅིག་འདུག་པ་ འ་ནི་འདི་བདའ་ཟུན་ཟུནམ་མས་ རྒྱ་གར་གྱིས་Some people stole betel nut but others didn't take any. Among them was a man called Ap Khuru Paw. He was arrested by the owner,
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaབདའ་ཟུན་སྦེ་ རྒྱ་གར་གྱིས་གྱི་ཆུང་གིས་ རྩཔ་རོ་ལོང་བཟོ་བཏང་ དེ་ལས་ཆ་རོགས་གཞན་མི་ཚུ་ སྔོན་མོ་འབྱོགས་ཡར་སོང་ནུག་ འབྱོགས་སོང་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ ལམ་ཁར་ཞག་སྡོད་སྡོདཔ་མས་ དེ་ལས་ཞག་སྡོད་འབདཝ་ད་who stabbed him with knife and made [him into a] zombie. When other friends spent a night on their way home,
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaའ་ནི་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་འདི་ ཀྲིག་ཀྲི་ཁོང་ཞག་སྡོད་སར་འདི་ནང་ནམ་སོརཔ་ཅིན་ཀྲིག་ཀྲི་ལྷོདཔ་མས་སླབ་མས་ལོ། དེ་ལས་སྟེ་སྒོ་ཁར་ཏོག་མ་བརྐྱབ་བསྒོམ་ཞིནམ་ལས་that evening the zombie Ap Khuru Paw arrived where they were staying.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaག་སྟེ་ཡང་པར་མ་བཏུབ་པར་དེ་རང་སྡོད་ ནུབ་ཅིག་ ཁོང་ཆ་རོགས་གཞན་མི་ཚུ་ཉིད་ལོག་མ་བདེ་བར་འ་ནི་སྦེ་སྡོད་འབད་ དེ་ལས་དྲོ་པ་བྱཔོ་འབོ་ཅིག་རྐྱངམ་ཅིན་ འ་ནི་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་ དེ་སྦེ་རང་ནང་ལས་མར་ལྟ་སྐྱེག་འབོག་འབད་ འ་ནི་སྦེ་སོང་འབད་དེ་ལས་The other friends couldn't sleep well and they stayed awake throughout the night. When the cock crowed in the morning, Ap Khuru Paw swayed down like this.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaསྟེ་ དེ་གི་ནངས་པ་ད་རུང་ཉིནམ་གཉིས་འོག་གོ་པས་པ་ ཉིནམ་གཉིས་འོངམ་ད་སྟེ་ ད་རུང་ཕར་དེ་ཚེ་ཞག་ཅིག་སྡོད་འབདཝ་ད་ཚེ་ ལྟོ་བཟའ་ཚརཝ་ཅིན་ཤིང་གུ་མཛེགས་མཛེགསཔ་མས་The next day they had to spend the night along the way again. As soon as they finished dinner they all climbed up a tree and stayed there.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaཤིང་གུ་མཛེགས་འབདཝ་ད་ ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་ཀྲིག་ཀྲིག་རང་ ཤིང་གི་ར་ཏོ་ཁར་རྡོ་མ་རྩེཝ་གངམ་འདི་འབད་སྦེ་ ཤིང་གི་ར་ཏོ་ཁར་འོང་མས་ལོ། དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ཤིང་གུ་ཡང་མ་ཆགས་Again, the zombie reached them, and was under the tree with a basket of betel nuts on his back.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaདེ་ཚེ་དེ་སྦེ་རང་ཤིང་གུ་སྡོད་ དེ་གི་ནངས་པ་ལུ་ དེ་གི་ནངས་པ་ བྱཔོ་འབོ་ཅིན་སྟེ་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་ ཤི་སོང་ནུག། ད་རུང་ར་The men spent the night on the top of the tree and when cock crowed Ap Khuru Paw automatically laid down on the spot.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaད་དེ་གི་ནངས་པ་ ཁྱིམ་ནང་ལྷོ་ལྷོདཔ་མས་ ཁྱིམ་ནང་ལྷོད་ ཁྱིམ་ནང་ལྷོད་འབདཝ་ད་ དེ་ལས་ཨམ་སྲུ་འདི་གིས་ ཨཔ་གུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་གི་ ཨམ་སྲུ་འདི་གིས་འདྲི་ནུག་པ་ དབའེ་ངེ་གི་ཨ་པ་འདི་ཤོས་ སླབ་འདྲི་འདྲིཝ་ཨིན་མས་ཨམ་སྲུ་འདི་གིས། ཨ་པ་འདི་འོང་དོ་ཟེར་སླབ་ནུག་ ཤི་སོང་ཡི་ཟེར་མ་སླབ་མས་པ།Next day they all reached home, and [when] the wife of Ap Khuru Paw inquired about her husband, they said that he was coming.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaཨ་པ་འདི་འོང་དོ་ཟེར་སླབ་བཞག་སྦེ་ཁོང་གཉིས་ཡར་སོང་ནུག། ཁོང་གཉིས་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་གིས་ཨ་ལོ་གཉིས་ཡོད་ཡོདཔ་མས་ བུམ་གཉིས་དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ ཁྱིམ་ནང་འོང་རྡོ་མ་ཁུ་ཆ་གཅིགཔ་འདི་ཡང་འབད་ཧེལ་ ཁྱིམ་ནང་འོངམ་ཅིན་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ཕར་ཁྱི་གྱི་གི་ཁུག་ཧེལ་And they left. Later, Ap Khuru Paw reached home and put his basket on the floor.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaཧེ་མ་རང་ ད་དེ་ལས་བུ་གཞི་རང་ཟེར་ཏེ་ ཕར་ཆོམ་བཟའ་གེ་སླབ་འབད་ བལྟ་བར་སོང་སོངམ་མས་ བལྟ་བར་སོངམ་ཅིན་ རྐང་ཅུང་ཁར་བཤེལ་ འཐུ་ཟ་ད་ནུག་གཅིག་ གཅིག་ཟ་ཚརཝ་ཅིན་ དེ་ལས་གཅིགཔ་འདི་ཨའི་འདི་གིས་འབད་མར་ཨོ་ཁ་ནང་འཛུལ་སོང་ནུག།His daughters were happy about his return and went to get gifts from him. Ap Khuru Paw ate one of his daughters on the spot. Feeling threatened and fearful, the wife and other daughter went to downstairs to hide themselves.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaཨོ་ཁ་ནང་འཛུལ་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་གླང་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་ཡོད་ཡོདཔ་མས་རོགས་ཨོ་ཁ་ནང་ མར་ཨོ་ཁ་གི་ཕྱི་ཁར་བརྟག་བཞག་བཞགཔ་མས་ གླང་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་ཡོད་འབད་ནི་འདི་གི་ དེ་ལས་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་ ཡར་འབད་མ་ཚུག་པར་Fortunately there was an ox tied just near the door and it didn't allow Ap Khuru Paw to enter inside.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaགླང་འདི་གིས་གནམ་མེད་ས་མེད་གི་རྭ་བསིག་བརྐྱབ་སྟེ་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ནུབ་གཅིག་དེ་སྦེ་རང་སྡོད་ དེ་གིས་ནངས་པ་འབདན་ ཨམ་སྲུ་འདི་ཡང་ ཤར་དཀརཝ་ཅིན་ ཡར་སོང་ནུག།They were safe that night. Early in the morning the mother and the daughter started a journey to their village.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaཤར་དཀརཝ་ཅིན་ཡར་མི་འདི་གིས་ ཕར་མོ་རང་གིས་གཡུས་ཁར་ལོག་ཡར་གོ་པས་སླབ་སྦེ་ ནམ་མར་འཁྱིད་འོང་འོངམ་མས་པ་གཞན་མ་པ་ ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་གིས་She brought to Ap Khuru Paw's house as his wife before.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaད་མོ་རང་གིས་གཡུས་ཁར་ལོག་ཡརཝ་ཨིན་སླབ་ཡར་ཝ་ད་ དེ་ལས་སྟིང་ད་རུང་བླམ་ཅིག་འབྱོན་འབད་ དབའེ་བུ་མོ་ག་སྟེ་འགྱོ་མི་དགོ་ ཁྱོད་ག་སྟེ་སོང་སར་འ་ནི་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའ་བོ་འདི་ཁྱོད་སྟིང་བདའ་རང་འཐོན་འོང་སླབ། ཁྱོ་རང་རྒྱབ་ལོགས་བརྟ་ཤིག་སླབ་ནུག།On her way home, she met a Lama who told her not to go back. He also told her there was no use to go back as Ap Khuru Paw would follow her anywhere where she went. Lama told her to not look back.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaརྒྱབ་ལོག་བལྟ་ཤིག་སླབ་ད་ སྟེ་མོ་རང་གིས་ལོག་བལྟཝ་ད་ མི་མཐོང་མས་སླབ་མས་ལོ་ སྟེ་ བླམ་འདི་གིས་འ་ན་ ཕྱལ་ཐག་ནང་བཙུགས་སྦེ་ འ་ནི་སྦེ་བལྟ་བཅུགཔ་ད་ མཐོང་མཐོངམ་མས་ ཨ་འོ་དེ་འབདན་ཏེ་ བུ་མོ་ཁྱོད་གཡུས་ཁར་མ་ཚད་ག་སྟེ་ཡང་སོང་མི་དགོ་སླབ་སྦེ་ ད་རུང་ལོག་འཁྱིད་ མོ་རའི་ཁྱིམ་ནང་ འཁྱིད་འབག་བར་བཀལ་ དེ་ལས་She didn't see Ap Khuru Paw, but the Lama held her under his arm and let her see him. The Lama took her to her house.
- དཀར་པོ་ལ་ Karpolaབླམ་འདི་ཁྱད་འདྲག་ཅིག་ཨིན་མས་པ་ དེ་ལས་སྟེ་ ཕར་དོང་བརྐོ་ནི་ཡང་ཨཔ་ཁུ་རུ་དཔའོ་བོ་རང་བཙུགས་ དོང་བརྐོ་བཅུག་ དེ་ལས་འ་ནི་འབད་ ས་ཨེབ་སྦེ་འབའ་བཞག་བཞགཔ་མས།Lama made Ap Khuru Paw dig a hole, and the Lama finally buried Ap Khuru Paw there and performed rituals.
