Norbu from Chaling village in Trashigang Dzongkhag (district) narrates the origin story of a village without water. The characters of the story include a rich boy, a poor boy and a prince, who made a plan to make water available in a village that was controlled by demons. The poor boy could understand the language of animals and found a couple of crows discussing a strategy to subdue the demons. The boy implemented the crow's strategy and successfully subdued the demons. Later all three boys were appointed as the leaders of the community.

    Once upon a time there lived a prince, a rich and a poor boy. The three travelled and reached in a village where there was no water. The village people had to sacrifice one person of tiger year, yearly as tax to the demon. The demon in return gave the village people with water for one year.

    One day a prince, a rich and a poor boy came together to discuss on subduing the demon. They agreed to carry raison and head towards the demon to subdue him. After having discussed the three went to a village plain and took a nap.

    དེ་ལས་ མར་ལས་ཡར་ ཚོགས་ཆང་བཏང་། ཚོགས་ཆང་བཏང་སྟེ་ འབག་འོང་སྟེ། ཚོགས་ཆང་བྱིན་ཏེ་ ཉལ་སྡོདཔ་ད། ཆང་གི་ར་བཟི་སྟེ་སྡོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ དེ་བསྒང་ ཏེ་ སྤྱང་ཀའི་བུ་འདི་ ཆང་མ་འཐུང་པར་ སྒྲ་སྙན་ངག་ཤེས་ཏེ་ཡོད་ཟེར་ཨིན་པས། སྒྲ་སྙན་ངག་ཤེསཔ་ད་ལུ་ ད་རེས་ནངས་པ་འབད་བ་ཅིན་ ཁོང་གསུམ་པོ་ ག་སྟེ་འགྱོ་དོ་ཨིན་ན་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ བདུད་ཀྱི་ལྟོ་སྦེ་འགྱོ་དོ་ཨིན་པས། ད་ བདུད་ཀྱི་ལྟོ་འབད་འགྱོ་ད་ལུ། དེ་བསྒང་ ཁོང་གསུམ་ བདུད་ཀྱིས་ཟ་འོང་ཟེར། ད་བདུད་ཀྱིས་ཟ་འོང་།
    They wined and dined and got drunk but the poor boy did not drink the alcohol. The poor boy had the ability to understand even the language of animals (Dra-Ngyen-Nga). He overheard crow’s conversation. The crow’s conversed, “These three are the man heading to subdue demon. But they are going as food to demon. They are going to be eaten by the demon.”

    The crow’s said referring to the three that they would not be able to subdue the demon. In the meantime the mother crow said that she had the means to subdue the demon. “I will tell you about the idea but no to these three boys,” said the mother crow to father crow. “You have to tell me as we are husband and wife,” responded the father crow.

    ང་གིས་འབདན་ ཨ་ནཱ་ལས་ཕར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱག་དཀརཔོ་ བྱག་དཀརཔོ་གཅིག དམརཔོ་གཅིག གནགཔོ་གཅིག ཕར་ཁ་ཐུག་ལུ་ བདུད་གཅིག་དང་གསུམ་ཡོད་ཟེར་ཏེ། བྱག་དཀརཔོ་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱ་པོད་དཀརཔོ་གཅིག་དང་ དར་དཀརཔོ་གཅིག་འགྱོ་འོང་ཟེར། བྱག་དམརཔོ་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱ་པོད་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་དང་ དར་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་འོང་ཟེར། བྱག་གནགཔོ་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱ་པོད་གནགཔོ་གཅིག་དང་ དར་གནགཔོ་གཅིག་འགྱོ་འོང་ཟེར།
    As we travel further we will come across a white, red and a black cliff and the demon lived little far from these cliffs, the mother crow said. “You will have to sacrifice a white cock and erect white flag at white cliff. Sacrifice a red cock and erect one red flag at red cliff and a black cock and black flag at the black cliff,” explained the mother crow to her husband.

    དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ བདུད་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ ཏེ་ རྒྱལ་པོའི་བང་མཛོད་ནང་ན་ གྱི་ཅུ་ ཨ་ནཱི་བཟུམ་མའི་གྱི་ཅུ་ཡོད། ཨ་ནཱི་གིས་འབདན་ བདུད་བཏུལ་ཚུགསཔ་ཟེར་སླབ་ཅི་ལོ། ནངས་པ་བཟུམ་ ཁོང་ར་གཉིས་ ཆང་གི་ར་བཟི་སྟེ་ཉལ་སྡོདཔ་ད་ དེ་ལས་ སྤྱང་ཀའི་བུ་གིས་ སྒྲ་སྙན་ངག་ཤེས་ ཏེ་ དེ་ལས་ དེ་འཕྲོ་ལས་ ལོང་སོང་སྟེ། གཡུས་ཁར་འགྱོ། བྱ་པོད་དཀརཔོ་དམརཔོ་གནགཔོ་ གསུམ་འབག་འོང་། དེ་ལས་ དར་གསུམ་འབག་འོང་། དེ་ལས་ གྱི་ཅུ་ རྒྱལ་པོའི་བང་མཛོད་ནང་ལས་གྱི་ཅུ་འབག་འོང་།
    “Then you will have to get a knife from kings treasury only after that you shall be able to subdue the demon,” said the mother crow. The next day when the prince and a rich boy were still drunk and asleep the poor boy having learned they way to subdue the demon from the conversation between two couple crows through his ability immediately went to the village. He gathered white, red and black cock and flags and even a knife from king’s treasury.

    ང་བཅས་ར་ དུས་ཨ་རྟག་ར་ ལུམ་པ་ལུ་ ཆུ་མེད་མི་འདི་ ཆུ་མེད་པའི་ཁར་ ཁྲལ་འདི་ སྐྱེས་པ་སྟག་གི་ལོ་པ་རེ་རེ་ བྱིན་སྡོདཔ་ད་ དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ ད་ ཨ་ནཱ་ལས་ ཁྲལ་བྱིན་སྡོདཔ་བ་འདི་ ཁོ་བདུད་བཏུལ་དྲག་འོང་ཟེར་ སོང་སྟེ། དེ་ལས་ ཁོ་གིས་ དར་གསུམ་ གྱི་ཅུ་གསུམ་ལེན་འབག་འོང་སྟེ་ བྱ་པོད་གསུམ་འབག་འོང་སྟེ་ འོངམ་ད་ལུ། དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ བྱ་པོད་གསུམ་འབག་འོང་སྟེ་ ལྷོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ ཆ་རོགས་གཉིས་འདི་ རྒྱལ་པོའི་བུ་དང་ དེ་ལས་ ཕྱུག་པོའི་བུ་གཉིས་ གཉིད་མ་ཚོར་བར་སྡོད་ནུག་ལོ།
    He thought that it would be better for them to subdue the demon than to sacrifice a tiger aged person from the village yearly and pay as a tax to the demon. After gathering all the things he returned back to his friend and saw his friends still in sleep.

    ད་འབདན་ ལོང་། ད་ ང་བཅས་གསུམ་ཡང་ འགྱོ་གེ་སླབ། ཕར་འགྱོ་ད་ ཧེ་མ་ར་ བྱག་དམརཔོ་ཅིག་ནང་ལྷོད་ནུག བྱག་དམརཔོ་གུར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ ད་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་སྟེ་ བྱ་པོད་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་ ཚེ་དར་བཏང་། དར་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་འཕྱར། ད་ ད་རེས་ཨ་ནཱ་ ཁྱོད་ལུ་ བློ་གཏད་ཡིད་གཏད་འབད་དེ་ འོང་དོ་མས། ཁྱོད་ལུ་ བློ་གཏད་ཡིད་གཏད་སྦེ་ སྡོད་དེ། བློ་གཏད་ཡིད་ཆེས་འབད་ སྡོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ ང་བཅས་གསུམ་ལུ་ གནོད་པ་མ་རྐྱབས་མས་ ཟེར་སླབ་ད་ལུ།
    The poor told them to wake up. He said that they will have to go. The three went and firstly came across the red cliff. There they prayed and sacrificed the red cock and erected the red flag. They whispered to the cliff that they have come trusting the cliff and requested and prayed asking not to harm them.

    ཨ་ནཱ་ ཉལ་སྡོད། ཨ་ནཱ་ཉལ་སྡོདཔ་ད་ ཕར་ཁ་ཐུག་གིས་ བྱག་སྦོམ་ལས་འབོ་ཡི་ལོ། དབའི་ ད་རེས་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ ཨ་ནཱ་ལུ་མགྱོནམ་གསུམ་ལྷོད་ནུག གཉིས་ཁྱོད་ར་ ཟ་རུང་ གཅིག་འདི་ ང་ལུ་ལྷང་གེ་དབའི་ཟེར་སླབ་ད་ལུ། ཨ་ནཱི་ བྱག་དམརཔོ་ལས་ ཏེ་ ད་རེས་ཨ་ནཱ་ ང་ལུ་ བློ་གཏད་ཧིང་གཏད་འབད། བློ་བདེ་དེ་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་སྟེ། ང་ལུ་ ཚེ་ཐར་བྱ་པོད་བཏང་སྟེ་འོང་ཞིནམ་ལས་ ང་གིས་ བཟའ་ནི་མི་མཐོང་མས། ནངས་པ་ ཁྱོད་ར་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ ཁྱོད་ར་ ག་སྟེ་ཟ་རུང་ཟ། ག་དེ་ཟ་རུང་ཟ། དབང་ཚད་ཨིན་ཟེར་ སླབ་སྟེ་བཏང་ནུག ནུབ་མོ་འབོ་ཡི་ལོ།
    While they slept on the cliff they heard distanced call from the other cliff saying “Hey! Today you have three guests with you. If you eat two I would like to beg one for me. Red cliff responded, “They have prayed and trusted on me besides they sacrificed a cock for me. I am not eating any of them. You can eat when they reach there and they are all yours when they reach to you.”

    དེ་ལས་ བྱག་ བྱག་གནགཔོ་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱ་པོད་གནགཔོ་གཅིག་ཚེ་དར་བཏང་། དེ་ལས་ དར་གནགཔོ་གཅིག་འཕྱར། དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ འཕྱརཝ་ད་ལུ། ད་རུང་ བྱག་དཀརཔོ་ལས་ ཕར་ལས་འབོ་ཡི་ལོ། འབོཝ་ད་ལུ་ ད་ ཨ་ནཱི་གིས་ བྱ་པོད་ ད་རེས་ ང་གིས་ ཨ་ནཱ་བློ་གཏད་ཧིང་གཏད་འབད་དེ་ཉལ། ང་ལུ་ གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་སྟེ་ཉལཝ་ད་ལུ་ ཤིང་དང་རྡོ་ཅིག་ལས་མེད་རུང་ ང་ལུ་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་སྟེ་ ཉལ་བ་གིས་མ་ཚད་ ཁོང་གསུམ་གྱིས་ ཚེ་ཐར་རང་ ང་ལུ་ བྱ་པོད་གཅིག་འབག་འོང་སྟེ་བྱིན་ཡི། ད་ ང་གིས་ཨ་ནཱ་ལུ་ ཟ་ནི་མི་མཐོང་མས། སྐྱབས་བཟུམ་ཅིག་འབད་ བཞག་ནི་ཨིན་ཟེར། ཁྱོད་ར་ ནངས་པ་ ཁྱོད་ར་འབད་སར་ ལྷོདཔ་ད་ལུ་ རྨུར་རུང་རྨུར། ཟ་རུང་ཟ། ད་རེས་ ང་གིས་ཨ་ནཱ་ཟ་ནིའི་ལམ་མེད་མས་ཟེར་སླབ་ཅི་ལོ།
    When they reached at the black cliff they sacrificed the black cock and erected black flag. They again heard a distance call from the white cliff but the black cliff responded that the boys have slept on his cliff after having prayed for him and trusting him. “Today I am taking them on refuge in my cliff but you can eat it when they reach your cliff,” voiced the black cliff. “I cannot eat them here,” added the voice from the cliff.

    དེ་ལས་ ནངས་པ་བྱག་དཀརཔོ་འབད་སར་ལྷོདཔ་ད་ བྱ་པོད་དཀརཔོ་བཏང་སྟེ་ དེ་ལས་ ཚེ་ཐར་ ཚེ་ཐར་བཏང་། དར་དམརཔོ་གཅིག་འཕྱར། དེ་ལས་ ཚེ་དར་བཏངམ་ད་ལུ་ བདུད་ཀྱིས་འབོ་ཡི་ལོ། བདུད་ཀྱིས་འབོཝ་ད་ལུ་ ནངས་པ་ཁྱོད་ར་འབད་སར་འོང་མས། ང་གིས་ ཨ་ནཱ་ལས་ མི་བགོ་བཤའ་རྐྱབ་བྱིན་ནི་ མི་མཐོང་མས། ཟ་ནི་ མི་མཐོང་མས་ཟེར་སླབ་ནུག
    Next day when they reached at white cliff they sacrificed a white cock and similarly erected a white flag. The demon called from the distance asking the white cliff to share with him the meat of the three boys. The cliff voiced, “I cannot share with you their meat but they are coming for you tomorrow. You can have it at that time.”

    ནངས་པ་བཟུམ་འགྱོཝ་ད་ལུ་ སྤགས་ཤིང་ནང་ལས་ཡར་ སྦུལ་སྦོམ་ཅིག་འཐོན་སྟེ། དེ་ལས་ བདུད་འདི་ཡར་ལོང་སྡོད་པའི་སྐབས་ དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ བདུད་ལུ་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ། དེ་ལས་ ཏེ་ བདུད་ཀྱི་ཚར་ཅིག་ལུ་ མནན་ཏེ་འོངམ་ད་ལུ་ སྦུལ་གྱི་ཅུ་གིས་བཏོག་བཀོག བསད་ཚུགས་ཏེ། བསད་ཚུགས་ཞིནམ་ལས་ ང་བཅས་འཛམ་བུ་གླིང་ནང་ ཆུ་ག་ར་ གཡུས་ག་ར་ཆུ་བྱིན་ནུག་ཟེར།
    The next day a big snake appeared in front of them from a bamboo tree. When the demon stood up the boys prayed before him. But when the demon moved towards them at once, the boys cut the snake with the knife and killed it. Right after killing the demon all villages got access to water.

    The boys returned to the village after killing the demon. After that all three of them were appointed king and lived happily ever after. This is why even to these days we pray when we come across a tree or cliff considering them goddess of earth and goddess of tree. So the story depicts such believes.
