The song “The Stag Caught in the Meadow” begins on a sad note. It voices the despair of being trapped: just like a stag that cannot get out of a meadow, one cannot go beyond his or her village. In the following verses, however, the song speaks about reaching a village at the confluence of a river and mountains. Joyous with the view of a cluster of three villages, one sings a song. The reason for singing the song does not relate to the ability of singing, but to the joy of viewing the mountains. In the same way, one drinks water not out of thirst, but due to the joy of getting to the confluence of three rivers. This song is sung to a tune that is mostly used while reciting poems, such as the poems by the great Tibetan saint Jetsun Milarepa (c.1052 – c.1135 CE).
