Former Gup Lok Bdr Layo Monger from Tshokana village in Tsirang Dzongkhag (district) talks the Kartham riddle. Riddles are popular in Bhutan and used as a both an intelligence test and for entertainment. The Nepali speaking populations in the south call it "Gao Khane Katha" (stories to take castles). If the respondent does not know the answer, the person posing the question demands a khar, or a castle. In southern Bhutan, a village or town is demanded. If the person does not know the answer, the first person demands a village or town. The respondent must offer a town or village by name and the respondent will verbally claim the town and share the answer. If the respondent knows the answer, he may demand a village or town first to share his answer.
རྩི་རང་རྫོང་ཁག་ ཚོགས་ཀ་ན་གཡུས་ཚན་ནང་ལས་ རྒཔོ་བགྲེསཔ་ལོག་བཱ་དུར་ལ་ཡོ་མཱོང་གར་གྱིས་ མཁར་གཏམ་དང་ ཡང་ན་མགུ་འཐོམ་དྲི་བ་དྲི་སྲོལ་ཡོད་པའི་སྐོར་ལས་བཤད་ནི་འདུག མགུ་འཐོམ་དྲི་བ་དྲི་ནི་འདི་ འབྲུག་རྒྱལ་ཁབ་ནང་ལུ་ཡོངས་གྲགས་ཨིནམ་དང་ དེ་ཡང་དགའ་སྤྲོ་བཏོན་ནི་དང་ རིག་པ་བརྟག་དཔྱད་འབད་ནིའི་དོན་ལུ་ཨིན་མས། ལྷོ་མཚམས་པའི་ཁ་སྐད་ནང་ མགུ་འཐོམ་དྲི་བ་ལུ་ གའུ་ཁ་ནི་ཀ་ཐ་དང་ ཡང་ན་མཁར་གཏམ་ཟེར་སླབ་ཨིན་མས། མགུ་འཐོམ་དྲི་བ་དྲི་མི་འདི་གི་ དྲི་བ་དྲི་ཞིནམ་ལས་ ལན་སླབ་མི་འདི་གི་ ལན་སླབ་མི་འདི་གི་ ལན་མ་ཤེས་པ་ཅིན་ ཁྲོམ་དང་གཡུས་ ཡང་ན་མཁར་གཅིག་གི་མིང་སླབ་སྟེ་ བྱིན་དགོཔ་ཨིནམ་དང་ དེ་ལས་རྐྱངམ་ཅིག་ དྲི་བ་བཀོད་མི་འདི་གི་ལན་སླབ་ཨིན། གལ་སྲིད་ ལན་རྐྱབ་མི་གི་ལན་ཤེས་པ་ཅིན་ ཁོ་གི་གཡུས་དང་ ཁྲོམ་ག་འབད་རུང་ མཁོ་འདོད་འབད་ཆོགཔ་ཨིན།
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaང་རྩི་རང་རྫོང་ཁག་ མཚོ་གླིང་མཁར་རྒེད་འོག་ གཡུས་མཚོ་ཁ་ན་སྟོད་ལས་ཨིན། ང་ར་རྒཔོ་བགྲེསཔ་ལོག་བྷ་དུར་ལ་ཡོ་མང་གཱར་ཨིན། ལོ་རྒྱུས་ག་ནི་ཡང་མ་བཤད་པའི་ཧེ་མ་རང་ གའུ་ཁ་ནི་ཀ་ཐའམ་མཁར་གཏམ་ལས་འབད་འགོ་བཙུགས་གེ། ཁྱིམ་སྒོར་སྒོ་ཅིག་གི་སྦུག་ལས་ཀཝ་གཅིག་ཡར་ལྷོང་ལྷོངམ་འདི? ཉིན་གདུགས་ཨིན། ཉིན་གདུགས་འདི་ལུ་ མགུ་ལས་སྒོར་སྒོ་སྦེ་ ལགཔ་བཤེད་ས་གཅིག་ཡོད་ ཀཝ་འདི་ ཉིན་གདུགས་ཀྱི་ལགཔ་བཤེད་ས་འདི་ལུ་གོཝ་ཨིན། ང་བཅས་ནོར་འཚོ་སྟེ་སྡོད་པའི་སྐབས་ ང་བཅས་ནོར་རྫིཔ་ཚུ་གི་བར་ན་ གའུ་ཁ་ནི་ཀ་ཐའི་འགྲན་བསྡུར་འབད་ནི་ཡོད།I am from Tsirang Dzongkhag under Tsholingkhar gewog and village is upper Tshokana. And I am Ex-Gup Lok Bdr Layo Monger. Now if I turn to the direction of talking thing, first of all, I will start with riddles. What is round house with one pole erected? This is umbrella. Umbrella in round and has a handle. And handle is referred as pole. And when we were staying at the where cattle would graze looking after cattle, we the cowboys would come together to challenge riddles.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaཤིང་ཆུང་ཀུ། འཛེག་ནི་ལཱ་ཁག་ཡོད་མི། འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ འདི་ཟྭོ་ཆག་ཨིན།We use to ask “what is small tree in which we cannot climb” and its answer is nettles.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaམིག་ཏོ་སྦོམ། རྐངམ་བཅུ་གཟུགས་ཀ་ཀྲ་ཀོ་ཀྲ། འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ཆུ་ནང་སྡོད་མི་ སྦལཔ་ཀང་ཀུར།Big eyes, Crocked body and ten legged. With rounds eyes and lost consciousness mind and answer is crab which lives in water.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaཨའི་ཐགཔ། ཨ་ཞེམོ་མེ་ཏོག ནུ་གཅུང་དབྱིབས་སྒོར་སྒོ་འབད་མི། འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ འདི་ཀ་ཀུ་རུ་ཨིན་པས་ཏེ། ཀ་ཀུ་རུའི་ཐགཔ་ནར་ནོར་འབད་མི་འདི་ཨའི་དང་ མེ་ཏོག་ཤར་མི་འདི་ཨ་ཞེམོ་ དེ་ལས་ ཀ་ཀུ་རུ་ཁོ་ར་འདི་ནུ་གཅུང་།What is mother which is thread stretching, sister flower and brother in round shape. That is pumpkin with thread like thing stretching, blooming flower is sister and the Pumpkin itself is brother.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaདེ་ལས་གཞན་སླབ་མས་ འ་ནཱི་འདི་ ནོར་རྫིབ་ཀྱི་མཁར་གཏམ་འདི་ཨིན་ མི་གསུམ་གྱིས་ སྐེད་རགས་གཅིག་བཏགས་མི་འདི་ཟེར་སླབ་མས། འདི་ང་བཅས་ནཱ་ ཀཱ་མི་གིས་བརྡུངས་ཡོད་པའི་ རྐང་གསུམ་འབད་མི་ལྕགས་ཀྱི་ཐབ་འདི་ ད་ལྟོའི་བ་ན་ཡང་ཡོད་ ལ་ལུ་ཅིག་གིས་འདི་རང་ལག་ལེན་འཐབ་དེས། ལྕགས་སྒོར་སྒོ་གཅིག་གིས་ ལྕགས་ཀྱི་རྐང་གསུམ་བསྡམས་ཏེ།This is riddle of cowboys and it is asked like this “what is that that ties one belt by three people” and this is stove like material which is made by black smith used to cook. And other is, we have stuff to touch fire or to control of oven which has ring like thing attached in bottom.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaམི་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་ ལྷག་པའི་སིན་ཅུ་གཅིག་བཏབ་མི་འདི་ཟེར། བཏབ་འཛིན་ལུ་གོཝ་ཨིན།For this riddles goes like this, two people wore one nose ornament. Clamper.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaད་རུང་སླབ་འོང་ མཚོ་སྐམ་ཅི། ཨ་ཞེ་གཤགས་ཅི་ལོ། ག་དེ་སྦེ? ས་ཏི་ཨིན། དེ་ཡང་ ས་སྣུམ་རྫོགས་པ་ཅིན་ མེ་ཤི་ཤིཝ་ཨིན།Again we say, lake dried, queen died and this is like this, with exhaustion of fuel dies light fire is lamp.
- དེ་ལས་ སླབ་ནི་ཡོད་ རྩང་གིས་གཟུགས་སྐོར་ར་རྐྱབ་སྟེ་རྨ་བཏོན་ནུག་ལོ་ འ་ནཱི་ཀ་ཐ་འདི་མ་ཤེས་པ་ཅིན་ ཁྱི་ཤ་མེ་བཏང་ཟ། ཟེར་སླབ་འོང་ འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ འདབ་མ་ལས་བཟོ་ཡོད་པའི་ཐ་ལི།With thorn is body wounded all around, if you don’t know this Riddle, eat dog by roosting. PLate made out of Leaf.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaད་རུང་ཡོད་ ཕྱི་དངུལ་ཡིན་ལ་ནང་གསེར་ འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ? འདི་བྱམོ་གི་སྒོང་རྡོགAnd we too have another riddles, it is what is gold inside and silver outside. Inside there’s gold and outside it’s covered with silver? It’s an egg.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaསྡོང་པོ་ཟངས་དང་འདྲ་བ། འབྲས་བུ་ལྕགས་འདྲ་བ། རྒྱ་རེད།What is copper like stem and iron like fruit? The answer is Buckwheat.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaརོ་ཊི་བཟོ་ནི་ལུ་མེ་མ་དགོ་འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ? ཆང་བཟོ་ནི་གི་ཕབས།What is roti which needs no fire to make? if we say what is it, then it is used to make alcohol and is yeast.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaདེ་ལས་ ག་དེམ་ཅིག་བཙོ་རུང་འཚོ་མ་བཏུབ་མི་དང་ མེ་བཏང་པ་ཅིན་ ཡུདཔ་ཐེངས་ཅིག་ནང་འཚིགས་འགྱོ་མི་འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ? མགུ་ཏོ་གི་སྐྱ་ཨིན་པས།What is that which cannot be boiled ripened by boiling but can be boiled by burning? This is our hair which is never ripened.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaམ་ཟ་བ་ཅིན་ཉིནམ་གཅིག་བདའ་བདའཝ་ས་སྡོད་དགོཔ། ཟ་གེ་ཟེརན་ཨ་ཞང་གི་དགོང་འདྲ་བས། འདི་ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་བ་ཅིན་ སྤྱ་ཨིན་པས།If we leave it without eating, it is something to be chased whole day but if we eat, it is something that resembles uncle’s face, what is it? It is monkey.
- ལོག་བྷ་དུར་མང་གཱར་ Lok Bdr Mangaཟིར་ཟིར་བཏང་སྐད་རྐྱབ་འོང་སྦྱངམ་མེན། ཕྱག་ལྟག་གུ་ལས་སྐུདཔ་བཏག་འོང་བ་ཝན་མེན། འདི་བབ་ཤནམ། འ་ནཱི་ཚུ་མཁར་གཏམ་ཨིན་ ལེ་ཤ་བལད་ནིའི་རེ་བ་ཡོད་ དེ་འབདཝ་ད་མི་ཤེས་པས།What is that buzz but not bees and wears thread over shoulder but not Baun? It is thread spinner. This is the riddles and wanted to say more but I don’t know much.
