Alo is a sad kind of song that originated in the eastern part of Bhutan. When men were serving the army, for instance, the women left behind with their kids used to sing alos. In the past, the government periodically recruited in the villages men between the ages of thirty and sixty. Dokami from Nobgang village in Punakha shows how women carrying their kids on their backs sing this kind of song. They would spin yarn and do other kinds of work, singing alo songs. These songs’ titles always contain the term "alo" in them, but it never appears in the lyrics, which are very sad. Before there was only one tune, today there are two different tunes to which alos are sung.
