According to an oral tradition, the culture of narrating ballads began during the time of Phajo Drukgom Zhipo. The practice became popular after Phajo first communicated with his consort, Khandro Sonam Pelden, at Lungten Zampa by way of ballad. The culture of narrating ballads is well-known in Western Bhutan, as it originated in Thimphu. Later, people started to sing and narrate ballads during the construction of houses, and for general entertainment. Here, Sangay and friends from Punakha narrate a ballad.
