The lyrics of this tsangmo say that the genre originated in Tsang in Tibet. In the song, tsangmo is personified as a beautiful woman. When she arrived at a pass called Gampala, she was transformed in a monkey. This seems to imply that tsangmo originated in Tsang. Tsangmo is a type of song used to express one's emotions, conveying their affection to another. Tsangmo can be sung to express love, hatred or any other feeling. It is exclusively sung and never danced to. Usually a composition is limited to a verse of four lines for a single expression. The tsangmo in the video is a mixture of all the different tsangmo categories as Tshewang Lhamo performs it for archival purposes. In reality, during a competition the performers will sing questions and answer in response to their opponent's verses. The tsangmo in the video opens with a laudatory tsangmo to impress each other. When the climax is reached, they switch to an antagonizing tsangmo to defame the opponent.  Finally the opponents compromise and sing a befriending tsangmo to reconcile.
