Zhey is a song and dance characterized by quick steps performed while wearing elaborate costumes, and no shoes. The costumes differ from one region to another. There are different types of zheys, of which the four major are: the goen zhey of Gasa, the wang zhey of Thimphu, the nub zhey of Trongsa, and the woochupai zhey of Paro. In this video, Namgay from Ritsa in Punakha sings “A Row with Golden Throne” (Zhug Drel Ser Trhi), a wang zhey that can be performed in both fast and slow rhythms. What makes this genre stand out from other Bhutanese music genres is the religious tone of its lyrics.
