The song “Rising Early from the East” (Sharle Hale Mishar) is a popular song across Bhutan. Performed in this video by Leki Tshomo from Daagssa, Mongar, this song describes natural cycles of the environment. The song says, “If the early sun from the east does not rise, how can the white mountain in the west be melted? If the white mountain does not melt, how can a fresh river flow? If there is no fresh water from the river, how can the cypress tree grow?” The song concludes by saying, “If there are no cypress trees, where can the cuckoos descend? If there are no cuckoos, we will not be able to hear their melodious songs.”
