Most of the languages in Bhutan belongs to two genetic groups of Central Bodish and East Bodish. The Layakha is the closest relative to the Central Bodish languages. Laya dialect is the cultivated form of the native language of the Laya, the inhabitants of which as well as their language have traditionally been known as Layakha. The Laya were amongst the first in Bhutan to be blessed to the teachings of the Drukpa Kagyü by Zhapdrung Ngakwang Namgyel. Today with the development, people from other Dzongkhag started coming in Laya and with them, came different languages like Dzongkha and Tshangla etc. Most of people in the community can also speak other languages fluently. Thus, people has fear that community may loses its own language. Tenzin also states that cross-cultural marriage; education and developmental activities can lead to serious breakdowns in communication. Laya dialect is widely spoken by the Layaps and a medium of communication among the Layaps. He says, the younger generation may not speak Layakha in future because Layaps are living in a diverse society. Though, Bhutan was not defined by a single language, but demarcated by many dialects. Layakha represents a distinct set of tradition and the means of communication for the people of Laya. Language can be also attributed to the self-image that they attach to their uniqueness. Language always kept intact and makes closed-knit communities, which were far-flung.
