The Bonkor festival is said to have been introduced by Zhabdrung when he first host in Laya and that celebrates the onset of spring bringing fertility to crops and livestock. Most villages in the country have local customs and rituals that have been practiced over many generations. The Bonkor celebration is mainly dedicated to Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, and held every three years. The Bonkor festival is organized and sponsored by entirely Laya community. On the 8th day of the fourth month in Bhutanese calendar, people starts to walk from Pazhi village and gathers at Laya Tashichoeling lhakhang. The Bonko is definitely an occasion for festivity; the people of Laya believe that the purpose is to ensure the wellbeing of their crops and livestock, timely rainfall, healthy crops and cattle, and bumper harvests. The celebration is to deal with curses, calamities and malignant spirits. It foretells abundance of rainfall, less epidemic and a good harvest for the following year.
