Sonam Gyaltshen narrates some brief etymology of the places around his home. Going by his story, the places were named by a group of traveling people, looking for a good location to settle down. He says that his ancestors began from a place called Menma. The group reached a valley of a deep forest and did not know where to go. They called that place Mongar, meaning 'valley of confusion'. Rizomo (a term in Tshanglakha/Sharchop) was then named after a confluence of rivers. As the journey took them further up, they passed a spot they named Mizomphu, meaning 'mountain where people gathered'. From there the next place was named Mangkhar (roughly meaning 'place where many settled'). Sonam heard all this from his local elders.
