The invocation of local deities is an annual event practiced in most parts of Bhutan to protect people from misfortune, rivalry, contempt, ailments, epidemics and to ensure a bountiful harvest. On the second day of the Buli Chodpa ritual, that happens on the fifteenth day of tenth Bhutanese month, an invocation of a local deity was conducted in Kheng Buli in Zhemgang district. While Buddhist rituals and the rite of the festival happen in the local temple, in a nearby field called Menmo Drang a similar Bön ritual of invocation is led by a Gonpo Wangdi, a Bonpo (a priest in the Bön tradition). The Bonpo ritually invites the god of wealth known as the Odey Gongyen. The villagers then make offerings to the god, requesting him to provide the needed blessings and protection. The event is sponsored by the local people.
