People in Soe Geog do not usually grow cereals, depending solely on domestic cattle for their subsistence. The rearing of yaks is the main occupation in the area, where there is a unique tradition of classifying animals in accordance to their age, sex, color, and general appearance. In terms of age, a newborn calf is called bochung; when it reaches one year old, it is called ser ser; when it reaches three it is known as losum. If it is female, when it reaches four years old, it is known as jomo; if it is male, yakto. Five-year-old females are called hampa; five-year-old males are called yak. A female or male animal without horns is called a-yok. The three kinds of yaks are zhoel, zhoel phob and yak. A yak that does not belong to a group and has underwent castration is called zhol phab, while those that are not castrated and are able to produce quality offspring are called zhol. The one that simply underwent castration is called yak. A pregnant animal that will give birth next year is a dram, and animals who have given birth are yam. A barren female animal is a zekam. In terms of hair color, a brown-haired animal is called bamar; a black-haired one, nap; a gray-haired one, chunyel; an animal that has white and brown mixed hair is a bathra; if it has white and black mixed hair, it is a takthra. If a black-haired animal has a white forehead it is called nak dok; if it has a white mouth, chow; if it has a white face, drukar. Finally, black or white animals with a white face and black eyes are called tshomik.
