Dr. Jampa Trinley
For today's topic, I am mainly going to give a talk on mendrup [sacred medicine] ritual.
Before initiating this mendrup ritual, it is critical that we have a vajra master who possess all the inner and outer secret qualities and who had received the empowerment before.
The master must have received this kind of empowerment and secret oral teachings and instructions, such as Yuok Nyingtik, ritual practice, upadesha, and guidance from someone who knows how to keep the samayas.
Not only that, the student must have great faith in his teacher and also know about to keep the samayas.
For the empowering the medicine ritual, there are three stages, namely, the preliminary stage, the actual middle stage, and a conclusion that summarized everything.
First of all, for the preliminary stage, the ritual must be on performed in an auspicious month and year. It can't be a black year or black month.
Then the month should be chontrül dawa, the month in which the Buddha performed the miracles. It's the first lunar month of the year.
Likewise, it can be the second lunar month in which the Four Medical Tantras was revealed.
Then another one is the chutö dawa, which is the sixth lunar month when the earth is blessed with healing power.
Likewise, the ritual can be performed in the eighth lunar month, during which the rishi star appears in the sky. And the place should be a holy site where the Buddha had set his foot or in a temple by thoroughly cleaning it.
For example, you have to clean the site properly and then decorate it with banners, parasols, ribbons, canopay, and other offering substances.
When we perform the sacred medicine ritual, we need to hang the scroll-paintings and build a mandala in the center.
On its two sides, we need to make all the essential offerings. In the beginning, you need to say prayers, create tsa-tsa, or perform other religious activities.
Then you need to perform virtuous actions, such as giving alms to help the needy.
In connection with that, the mandala should be built on a support. The best thing is, how should I put it? The best thing to do is create a mandala that is made from colored sands, but there are other options too.
For sand mandala, white sand is used by coloring it. Along with that, you need to blend it with curds.
Like that, you need to create the mandala properly. Alternatively, you can paint the mandala on a canvas. We have one painting depicting the entire adobe of the Medicine Buddha.
If you paint on the canvas, then you do it properly by following the practice of Tongwa Gyüpé.
However, if you don't have that kind of resources or you are performing the ritual alone, then it suffices that you paint one eight-petaled lotus on a piece of clothing and then built offerings on it.
In addition to that, in the middle of the mandala, you need to put the offering of grains, sandalwood, and other substances. And then place a blessed statue. Below that statute, fill a skull with the elixir.
On top of that, we need to put a mirror. On that mirror, first, smear some butter and then put some sindura power.
Then you have to write these words, namely milk, honey, sandalwood, and gyingba on paper and paste them on the mirror. And then add this sentence, Sa ba bi ta yi saha. After that, place the holy statue there.
On its two sides, you place the vajra and the bell. These are the part of preliminary.
Besides those, on the two sides of the mandala, we also need place lhungzé filled with an appropriate amount of medicines as prescribed by the subsequent tantra. These include dang, chi ma, ril bu, dek gu, men mar, and others. And these should be separated into two groups depending on their hot or cold nature.
Or you can beat them roughly and cleanse them. At the center of the mandala, you need to put myrobalan, the six precious substances, and chimé.
As for the direction of the mandala, where the master sits in relation with the mandala is regarded as the east.
As mentioned in our root text, the Gyüzhi, about the beautiful city of the medicine, we need to put the five principle medicines, namely ra nyé, nyé shing, cha ba, ba pu, [zé ma] and heat generating medicines.
On the south side, we need to put honey, flower, and akar. On the west side, we need to put three hots therapeutic substances, namely, ga, pi and po.
On the north side, we need to put the three cold medical substances, namely menchu, gurkum, and lishi. And then we have the prepare the torma model. In this text, it has provided the design of the torma.
The designs mentioned in this text has the retained their originalities.
The ritual and rite we perform follow the tradition existed during the time of the Fifth Dalai Lama, which the torma rituals and others.
Besides we need the essential articles and decorative offerings should be prepared both inside and outside wherever they are necessary. And we also need a ritual cleansing vase.
Likewise, saffron, mustard seed, and the other essential substances need the be placed near the master. The ritual tools, such as bells, damarus, drums, the regular and long trumpets should accompany the ritual.
When you perform the ritual, you can't do it half-heartedly as if someone has given you a work to do. You must do it wholeheartedly. As the saying goes, "Kel den dang ba dren pa dang. Lü chen sö nam kyi tsok tselwa."
"Kel den dang ba dren pa" means when others observe the ritual, it would arouse their deep faith and thereby increase our merits.
As I mentioned before, the ritual must be performed on desirable days, such as the Medicine Buddha's day on the eighth day or on the tenth day. I heard that in the past at Chokpori, the ritual was performed every year from the eighth day of the sixth lunar month.
At the Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute, we observe the same tradition every year on the eighth day of the sixth Tibetan lunar month. Before performing the ritual, the first thing we have to do is tagön, which is preparation.
When it is started, all the participants of the ritual will be put at their ease. And we should pray that not only us, the participants of the ritual, but all the scient beings be blessed and liberated from illness by the merit of this ritual.
So at the start, what are the texts we need to read? Here we have to recite a two-page text called Chimé Dütsi Bumgyen. This is the one. That one we need to read.
It began with these words, Penden tsawa lama rinpoché. Generally, we the recite these texts in the afternoon at three o'clock. Or during an auspicious coincidence.
So those are the text we read at the beginning of the ritual. It is followed by another text called Chimé Gyünkhyer. This is the scripture we need to read.
After that, then we have to pray an say Penden tsawa lama rinpoché one more time which is then followed the texts Shérap Nyingpo and Seng dong ma.
After that text, we have to Take Refuge in Three Jewels and say, I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Dharma. And I take refuge in the Sangha. Recite this prayer a few times.
It is followed by mandala offering. After that, here in this scripture, it provided the practices we need to perform for the medicine ritual.
After completing these tasks, then we need the read the text Gyüzhi Söldep. It is followed by Tönten zhi gyur ma. If we finished all these prayers, then that day's work is done.

After completing that, people can recite the same mantra at their will. It is important that we don't forget to do it.

After that, we need to read this text and pour another libation. It is in this text. Then we have the group prayer session, which needs to be consecrated.
After that, we have chasum which we need to read it outside. Unlike other, cha sum is a small unique text.
After cha sum, we need to read Shéyen Düldok and recite the Medicine Buddha mantra. Once these are done, then we go inside the house. Once inside, we have to circumambulate the medicine ritual mandalas.

During the sixth session, we need to read the text from here as before. It is followed by Ngöntok and then Gyüzhi Söldep, which we need to read one more time.
And then we need the read the Medicine Buddha text, Dochok Yeshé Wangyel, which is also a short text. After that, the purification and consecration rituals need to be performed, and then pour libation, do prostration, and present mandala.
After all these activities, a day's work is done. However, as this ritual is a tantric ritual, if we fail to follow the steps as I have already mentioned before, then we won't get the desired result.
On the second and third days, we follow the same steps as the first day. Once again, each day has six sessions. Then on the fourth day, the preparation for the empowerment needs to be done.
On that day, the first session is similar to the others. In the second session, we need to read the empowerment text from here.
And then we need to read the text, Wangchok Dütsi Chugyün, which is in this volume.
After that, we offer the mandala and consecrate the three jewels. After completion, we need to perform the fire offering rites outside the compound.
That rite is for purification of sins and removing obstacles and hindrances. The text for this rite is in this volume. For that fire ritual, the lines must be in drawn in white color.
A great portion of this fire ritual design is in white color, and there are representations of different gods in that design which need to be facing to the east side. After completing this ritual and once inside the house, we need to start the fourth session.
In that session, we need to pour libation and read the prayer Damchen Ngöntok just like the day one. With that, this session is over.
In the fifth session, there are also prayers and outside activities like the other sessions, including blessing the substances inside the house.
During the sixth session, we need to complete the unfinished tasks and other work just like the first day. By completing these tasks, we finish the fourth day. From the fifth day onward, we need to recite the long life mantra many times.
That day in the first session, after completing all the prayers including Menlhé Dochok and others, we have to recite the long life mantra. And that is the only difference.
During the second session, one of the main tasks is do bumpa practice. Complete the bumpa practice.
Then in the third session, we have Wangchok. It's in that volume. And then we need to perform consecration rite. After that, we need to perform a fire ritual for growth.
That is for growing power and good fortune. The mandala for this ritual is square, its design is mostly in yellow.
Again, after finishing this fire ritual, we go inside and perform the same activities for sessions four, five and six, which includes the Medicine Buddha prayer.
On the sixth day, we have the similar activities as day one. However, during the fourth session, the fire ritual for empowerment need to be performed. The shape of the mandala for that ritual is similar to that of a monk's cloak. And the main color is red.
That is also for increasing power. After that fire ritual, we go inside the house and perform similar activities as on the other days.
On the seventh day, we need to get up early in the morning. Normally, it will be on the fifteenth day of the sixth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar. It's time for kar kyong.
As it is kar kyong, so you can't eat any meat. On that day and during the first session, if time allows, you need to read the grand version of the Medicine Buddha prayer. Otherwise, you can read the shorter version. Also on that day, longevity empowerment will be given.
As longevity empowerment need to be given on that day, for that we need to perform all required tasks first. Everything needs to follow the text for the empowerment.
After giving the empowerment and completing all other related tasks, then at that point, with recitation the Medicine Buddha, [Tadyatha] Om BhaiSaJye BhaiSaJye Maha-BhaiSaJye BhaiSaJya RajaSamudGate Svaha, the master will remove the sacred thread, marking the end of the ritual. And then you pack the things. Otherwise, um...
From day two through day seven, a group of four people needs to recite the Medicine Buddha mantra without any pause in between. Suppose, two of them want to take a tea break, the other two need to recite the mantra. Likewise, if two people go outside, the other two need to continue the recitation of the sacred mantra.
If the continuity is not maintained, then the consequence is very severe. In the past, people believe that if there is a break in between, it will cause nose bleeding. Since 1987, when the same ritual was organized, some people did bleed for not doing it wholeheartedly. [Laughs]
Therefore, it is important to recite it wholeheartedly and to pray for the benefits of all living beings and their liberation from illness. If you do it like that with such motivation, you will get less illness and also serve the other beings. So that mantra is essential.
Other than giving empowerment on the seventh day, that day we don't have chasum. Otherwise, remaining sessions five and six are same as the other days.
On the eighth day, we need to pour libation to Zhanglön or the protector deities of the medicine. The text for this offering is in this volume. So we need to make an offering to Zhanglön Dorjé Düdül and the other main deities of the medicinal world. We also need to make an offering to Pel lha Dé gyé, Tséring Chénga, and Tenma Chunyi.
The text for Tenma Chunyi is not included in these volumes. We need to offer drink, mandala, and water offering. Everything must be done properly.
If you do all these, as I have mentioned today, mainly concerning its benefit, as said by the Medicine Buddha himself, if you take the pill to bless by the ritual, it is like an elixir that cure your illness.
You have to take the pill if you are ill. And it will bring immeasurable benefit.
So we can talk about the benefit continuously without an end. It is beyond the scope of anyone's estimation. It does have an effect like shooting an arrow at its target.
However, we can't see it with our eyes. It's largely a matter of faith. If you have faith, you will get siddhi. Otherwise, you won't get much. The more faith you have, the more siddhi you will get.
At the start of the ritual, there is only a small amount of elixir in the container for the mandala. However, as we progress and by the time when we complete the entire ritual, the elixir would overflow from its container. It is an indication that the Medicine Buddha, the protector deities, yidams, and others have blessed the sacred ritual.
So it is beneficial to many people. And above all, the ritual heal their mental afflictions. Thank you.

And then the text for consecration is here. It is in this volume. Likewise, the offering prayer to the Sixteen Goddesses is included in this volume. It is a lovely prayer when you chant it with its tune.
