“The Heart of the Mother Mare” is a consolation song. The lyrics to this folk song refer to four animal mothers – mare, doe, bird and fish. In other, more common versions of this song, the lyrics say that the mare should not be sad because the foal is leaving. The foal will not stay away forever; he will return after becoming as skillful as the mule. In the particular version performed in this video, there is no direct mention of the foal, the fawn, the chicks or the fingerlings. The only animals mentioned by name are the mare, the doe and the fish. The presence of the young offspring is nevertheless implied by the voice consoling their mothers with the promise of their return one day.
