Ugyen Dorji sings “The High Sky” (Gungtö Tönpo), a boedra song. He learned this song from his teacher, Gashey Pema Thinley, who studied in Tibet. According to the singer, despite this song’s past popularity, nowadays it is only rarely performed. The song expresses a request that the spiritual master come back and give blessings. The lyrics recall that the master was offered locally brewed alcohol in the previous year, and suggest that he or she come again to receive this year’s share.
