In an interview with Professor Jose Cabezon, Geshé Sopa talks about the establishment of a new temple in Wisconsin.
- Wisconsin
- Jose Cabezon: What about the new temple?
- Jose Cabezon: What, do you have a hope for building something...
- Geshe Sopa: Yeah, now there is...there is...
- Geshe Sopa: '81, Dalai Lama came here, the Kalachakra.
- Geshe Sopa: That time you need, Kalachakra initiation, a building or something,
- Geshe Sopa: some temple or place where the Kalachakra ritual, mandala, Dalai Lama's place, not all public.
- Geshe Sopa: Public we had the tent, tent, big tent.
- Geshe Sopa: [indecipherable] tent, the public stayed in the tent.
- Geshe Sopa: So they bought [indecipherable],
- Geshe Sopa: which is, they not structured as like temple,
- Geshe Sopa: just temple already kind of platform.
- Geshe Sopa: And they bringing also Kalachakra thangka,
- Geshe Sopa: they said twenty feet thangka were bringing.
- Geshe Sopa: So you have to build that kind of, uh...
- Geshe Sopa: so we did higher ceiling.
- Geshe Sopa: So that was then, after Kalachakra finished,
- Geshe Sopa: then that is not heated, and all rafters, and wrapped around nothing,
- Geshe Sopa: and bottom also several wood...treated wood,
- Geshe Sopa: from bottom and like pillar, and on the pillar, between beams sent this way,
- Geshe Sopa: and the temple is sitting there, sometimes little bit shakey.
- Geshe Sopa: And they, then we didn't have the money, etc.
- Geshe Sopa: Few years, during the summer, we gather there, whatever people come for teaching there.
- Geshe Sopa: During the winter, have to in my house over there, big house, and then living room put as, use as like temple.
- Geshe Sopa: Several years we do that.
- Geshe Sopa: And slowly over there, John Davenport, etc. few people put glass, and little bit,
- Geshe Sopa: year round useful, and then also insulation, slowly put it.
- Geshe Sopa: Now it looks like a real temple, but it's not solid. Shakey.
- Geshe Sopa: And also, now later the U.S. permitted to Tibetans,
- Geshe Sopa: a thousand Tibetans can come here to immigrate.
- Geshe Sopa: So that is from India, Nepal, etc.
- Geshe Sopa: So we had here also beginning, we...those thousand Tibetans,
- Geshe Sopa: several sites, different sites you can choose and then those sites you group, group, group.
- Geshe Sopa: So here, I was here, so therefore we...they choose one here.
- Geshe Sopa: So we had a site, Madison, Wisconsin.
- Geshe Sopa: So therefore, eighty or some people, Tibetans, coming here.
- Geshe Sopa: So then we had the, for that purpose, they are not...refugees,
- Geshe Sopa: so they are immigrants, so that means they have to, we have sponsor, you need,
- Geshe Sopa: you have to, when they come, place with house and job already you have, otherwise not allowed to bring.
- Geshe Sopa: So we have to organization to have everybody has job, housing, and everything prepared, then bring these.
- Geshe Sopa: So beginning eighty or some people came here,
- Geshe Sopa: then two years after that, then these Tibetans,
- Geshe Sopa: they can bring their own family, children or parents, etc. then rejoin them.
- Geshe Sopa: So that is the, after two years, then they begin slowly bringing from Nepal and India.
- Geshe Sopa: Now is all about four hundred Tibetans in Madison area, living.
- Geshe Sopa: So when they have also, when there is special Tibetan Buddhist ceremonies, new years, Dalai Lama, when he comes, etc.
- Geshe Sopa: Those will come, although they are not all the time, not participating teaching,
- Geshe Sopa: but they, many, many times they come.
- Geshe Sopa: When they come, during the summer, it's okay.
- Geshe Sopa: Whatever fits this little temple, that's okay.
- Geshe Sopa: And not fit, then they can stay outside or circumambulate, etc.
- Geshe Sopa: So now winter, you can't.
- Geshe Sopa: Too cold, snowing, windy, and ladies wearing dress, you can't sit there.
- Geshe Sopa: If they, whatever fit there, you can go, otherwise go to house, etc. etc.
- Geshe Sopa: Lot of problems, so therefore,
- Geshe Sopa: and the Westerners mainly, basically we have students,
- Geshe Sopa: group is Westerners, that also rising more and more.
- Geshe Sopa: So therefore we need really now a new temple.
- Geshe Sopa: That way the temple is the, established to, new temple now beginning to,
- Geshe Sopa: now we are raised some kind of money for temple fund.
- Geshe Sopa: If you have that ready, then build temple,
- Geshe Sopa: when we have the brochure and try to raise,
- Geshe Sopa: and somebody, architect, they made this kind of thing,
- Geshe Sopa: and actually that is, in U.S., building is so, two million or something they said.
- Geshe Sopa: I don't know how much of this we can able to raise.
- Geshe Sopa: But anyway trying to right now raising for the temple.
