Gendun Choephel Artists' Guild Interview 10: Norbu Tsering

ཨོང་་་ང་དྲུག་ཅུ་རེ་གསུམ་ལོ་ལ་ཡ་ཨོང་་་སྐྱེས་པ་ཡིན་པ།

I was born in 1963.

ཨོང་་་འཁྲུངས་ཡུལ་བྱས་ན་ལྷ་ས་རང་ནས་ཡིན།

My birthplace is Lhasa.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་ནས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ལྷ་སའི་ཅིག་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཆུང་བ་ནས་ཨ་ནི་་་

And so...from primary school in Lhasa, and then,

ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་འབྲིང་བ་དེ་འདྲས་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་ཐོན་ཀྱོག་༿པ་༾ཡིན།

...middle school, I graduated in this way.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་བདུན་ཅུ་དོན་དགུའི་ལོ་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་གང་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

Then after that, in 1979...

ཨོང་་་བོད་ལྗོངས་བརྙན་འཕྲིན་ལས་ཁུངས་ལ་ཡ་དེ་དུས་ཙམ་པ་ལོ་ཕལ་ཆེར་བཅུ་དྲུག་ཙ་ཅིག་༿ཙམ་ཞིག་༾རེད།

the Tibet Autonomous Region Television Station was about 16 years old at that time.

ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཐོག་མ་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་ཨོང་་་བརྙན་འཕྲིན་གྱི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་མི་སྣ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། གདམས་ཐོན་གྱི་ད་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་གསོ་སྐྱོང་བྱེད་ཡས་ཀྱི།

Because at the beginning, the instruction of, the training of...television artists...

ཨ་ནི་་་འདུག་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་༿ནས་༾ཕྲུ་གུ་དེ་འདྲས་ཁག་གཅིག་རུབ་རུབ་བཟོས་བྱས་ཡིག་ཚད་བཏང་བྱས་དེ་འདྲས་བྱས་པ་རེད།

it was done like this and a group of kids were gathered together and given an exam.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་དུས་ཙམ་པ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ལྷག་པར་དུ་ང་རང་དེའི་ནང་ལོགས་ལ་ཡ་ཁོང་ཚོ་ཚང་མ་ལོགས་ཀྱིས་༿ཚང་མས་༾འོས་སྦྱོར་ཆོན་པོ་བྱུང་བྱས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

And at that time...in particular, they all gave a strong recommendation for me to be in there...

ཨ་ནི་་་ཕྱིན་ཆད་དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་གསོ་སྐྱོང་ལ་ཡག་པོ་ཡོང་བ་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས།

And since that time I trained well.

ཨ་ནི་་་བོད་ལྗོངས་བརྙན་འཕྲིན་ལས་ཁུངས་ཀྱི་ལས་ཀའི་ནང་ལོགས་ལ་ཞུགས་པ་ཡིན།

And so, I worked in the Tibet Autonomous Region Television Station.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་གཅིག་བརྙན་འཕྲིན་ཐོག་གི་ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་བར་༿དེ་ཚོའི༾རི་མོའི་ལས་ཀ་དེ་འདྲས་མང་པོ་བྱས་པ་ཡིན།

After that...I did a lot of work on drawings for television.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་ནས་ལོ་ཁ་ཤས་ཕྱིན་པའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་གྱ་བཞི་ལོ་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་འགོ་བཙུགས་བྱས་ཨ་ནི་་་རྒྱ་ནག་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཁག་ལ་ཡ་འདུག་ཟེ་བྱས་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས་པ་རེད།

Then after several years, in 1984, I began to study in some schools in mainland China.

སློབ་གྲྭ་རེ་རེ་ལ་ཡ་ལོ་རེ་ཙ་རེ་ཙ་ཨོང་་་ཀྲུང་དབྱང་མི་རིགས་སློབ་ཆེན་ལ་ཡ་སློབ་སྦྱོང་ལོ་གཅིག་ཙ་ཅིག་བྱས་པ་རེད།

About a year at each school...I studied for about a year at the Minzu University of China.

དེ་ནས་ཨོང་ཀོང་ཀྲུའུ་༼རྒྱ་སྐད་ས་མིང་༽ཨོང་་་མི་རིགས་ཀོང་ཀྲུའུ་གི་ག་རེ་ཟག་༿ཟེར་༾རེད་པས་ཨོང་་་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཡ་ལོ་གཅིག་ཙ་༿ཙམ་༾ཅིག་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས།

Then I studied for about a year at Guangzhou...minzu, Guangzhou...what was it called...Fine Arts School.

དེ་ནས་ཐན་ཅིང༼རྒྱ་སྐད་ས་མིང་༽གི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་སློབ་གྲྭ་ལ་ལོ་གཅིག་ཙ་༿ཙམ་༾ཅིག་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས།

Then I studied for about a year at the Tianjin Fine Arts School.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་ནས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་དེ་མིན་གྱི་བོད་ལྗོངས་སློབ་གྲྭ་ཆེན་མོའི་ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་ཚན་ཁག་ལ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ལོ་གཅིག་ཙ་ཅིག་དེ་འདྲས་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱས་པ་ཡིན་པ།

And then...aside from that, I studied for about a year at the Fine Arts Department in Tibet University.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་བར་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་གྱ་བདུན་ཙ་༿ཙམ་༾དེ་བར་སླེབས་འགྲོ་གི་ཡོད་པ་འདྲ།

Then after that, it was probably about 1987,

ཨ་ནི་་་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་གྱ་བདུན་ཙ་དེ་བར་སླེབས་དུས་ཙམ་པ།

so when 1987 came,

ཨ་ནི་་་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཐོག་མ་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་ཕྱི་རྒྱལ་གྱི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། དེང་དུས་རི་མོའི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་བག་ཆགས་དེ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཀྲུང་གོ་ཁྱོན་ཡོངས་ཁོ་ར་༿ཁོ་རང་༾ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་ཤུགས་ཆེན་པོ་ཞེ་པོ་ཅིག་སླེབས་ཡོང་དུས་ཙམ་པ།

then...when the impact from contemporary art from abroad first had a strong influence all over China,

ཨ་ནི་་་ང་རའི་༿རང་གི་༾ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་གཅིག་ཨོང་་་ཕྱི་རྒྱལ་ནས་དར་ཡོང་པའི་དེང་དུས་ཀྱི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་ཟེར་དུས་ཙམ་པ་ཁོར་ཡ་༿ཁོ་ལ་༾གཅིག་ཨོང་་་ལྟ་སྣང་དེ་ཆེན་པོ་བྱུང་པ་དང་གང་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

and I also had a big impression from contemporary fine arts coming from abroad...

ཁོར་ཅིག་ཁྱད་ཆོས་ཤུགས་ཆེན་ཡོད་པ་ཅིག་ལ་ངོས་འཛིན་དེ་ཆེན་པོ་བྱུང།

I really recognized that it was very special.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་མར་སྤྱི་ཚོགས་སྒང་ལ་ཡ་སླེབས་ཚར་བའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

So after that...after I started working [lit. became part of society]...

སློབ་གྲྭ་ནས་བསླབས་པའི་རི་མོ་དེའི་གཞུང་དེའི་སྒང་ལ་མ་ཕྱིན་པ་བྱས་བྱས་༿ནས་༾ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

I didn't go into the art training that I studied in school because,

སོ་སོས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཅིག་དེང་དུས་ཀྱི་རི་མོའི་ཐོག་ལ་ཡ་སློབ་སྦྱོང་བྱེད་ཡས་དང་ཞིབ་འཇུག་བྱེད་ཡས་དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་ལས་ཀ་དེ་འདྲས་མང་པོ་བྱས་པ་ཡིན།

I did a lot of this kind of study and research about contemporary art.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་བྱས་པ་ནས་བྱས་བྱས་༿ནས་༾ད་ད་ལྟ་བར་དུ་ཡ་ལོ་ཕལ་ཆེར་བརྒྱད་ཅུ་གྱ་བདུན་་་་

And so, doing this up until now, about 1987...

དགུ་བཅུ་གོ་བདུན་་་་

1997...

ད་ལོ་བཅོ་ལྔ་བཅུ་དྲུག་ཙ་༿ཙམ་༾ཅིག་དེ་འདྲས་ཅིག་འགྲོ་གི་ཡོད་པ་འདྲ་ཕལ་ཆེར།

it's probably been about 15-16 years.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་ནང་ལོགས་ལ་ཡ་ཅིག་རི་མོ་འབྲི་ཡག་༿ཡས་༾ཐོག་མ་ལ་ཅིག་ད་འདྲ་མི་འདྲ་དེ་འདྲས་བྲིས་པ་ཡིན།

And within that [time], I drew all kinds of drawings at the beginning,

ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་གཙོ་བོ་སྣུམ་ཚོན་གྱི་རི་མོ་དེ་བྱས།

...primarily oil [paintings].

ཨ་ནི་་་སྣུམ་ཚོན་གྱི་རི་མོ་ང་ཚོས་ཐོག་མར་བྲི་ཡས་ཀྱི་ད་ཁོའི་ནང་ལོགས་ཀྱི་ཅིག་དོན་དག་དང་མ་སོང་ནའི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཅིག

For instance, the subject of the oil paintings that we first started to paint were...

ཨོང་་་ཆོས་དང་འབྲེལ་བ་ཡོད་བསྡད་པ་དང།

related to religion and,

ཨ་ནི་་་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཅིག་འབྲེལ་བ་མེད་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་ཨ་ནི།

...not related [to religion]...

དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་ག་རེ་ཟེར་ན་ཨོང་་་ཅིག་རྒྱུ་མཚན་གྱི་ཐོག་ནས་འབྲི་ཡས་དེ་འདྲས་དང་།

in this way...drawing with a purpose like this and,

ད་ད་རེས་ཡིན་པ་ཡིན་ན་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ང་ཅིག་ཨོང་་་དེའི་སྐོར་གྱི་བཟོ་འདྲ་བྲི་གི་ཡོད་པ། ཅིག་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཨོང་།

Nowadays...I am painting in this form...

རྒྱུ་ཆ་དང་མ་སོང་ནའི་གསར་པ་བེད་སྤྱོད་བཏང་ཡས་ཨོང་་་གང་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

using for instance new materials...

བསམ་བློ་དང་མ་སོང་ནའི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་དེང་དུས་ཀྱི་བསམ་བློ་ཅིག་ཁྱེར་བྱས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

bringing thinking...contemporary thinking...

ད་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་ཟེར་བ་དེ་དངོས་ཡོད་ཅིག་ག་འདྲས་གཅིག་ལ་ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད་མེད།

what is actually this so-called art,

དེ་འདྲས་གཅིག་ལ་ཡ་སོ་སོས་གཅིག་བསམ་གཞིགས་ར་༿འདྲ་༾ཅིག་་བྱས་བྱས་༿ནས་༾ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

how you make something like this from your thinking

འོ་ད་་་འདི་འདྲས་གཅིག་ལ་ཡ་དེ་འདྲས་ཅིག་མན་འགྲོ་༿མིན་འགྲོ་༾བསམ་བསམ།

oh, I think it is probably something like this.

དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་ལྟ་བ་ཞིག་ཁྱེར་བྱས་ཨ་ནི་་་འདྲ་མི་འདྲ་དེ་འདྲས་རྒྱུ་ཆ་ཡིན་ནའི་འདྲ་མི་འདྲ་ཚོད་ལྟ་བྱེད་ཡས།

By bringing this kind of perspective, trying all kinds of things with all kinds of materials,

ཨ་ནི་་་ཁ་བཏགས་ཀྱི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་འདྲ་མི་འདྲ་དེ་འདྲས་ཅིག་བཟོས་བྱས་ཅིག་བྱེད་ཡས།

and making different kinds of things out of katak...

ཚོད་་་ཨ་ནི་་་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ད་ལྟ་ཡིན་ན་དེ་བར་ལ་ཡ་ཅིག་ཐ་མག་གི་རྡོ་ཐས་ད་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཅིག་འདྲ་མི་འདྲ་དེ་འདྲས་བཟོས་བྱས།

trying...and so...nowadays I'm making different kinds of things out of cigarette tobacco,

ཨ་ནི་་་ཅིག་ད་ལྟ་ཅིག་ད་ཉའི་རིགས་ཀྱི་བཟོ་འདྲ་དེ་འདྲས་དེ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད་པ།

and now, I'm making things in the shapes of types of fish.

ཨ་ནི་་་ད་རེས་ཟླ་བ་བཅུ་གཅིག་པའི་ནང་ལ་ཡ་ཨོང་་་དབྱིན་ཇིར་ཡ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

And so this November, in England...

ང་ཚོ་འདུག་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་༿ནས་༾དགེ་འདུན་ཆོས་འཕེལ་གྱི་ཨ་ནི་་་རི་མོ་ཚོགས་པས་གཙོ་བོ་བྱས་པའི་་་

we arranged it in this way so that primarily the Gendun Choephel Artist Guild

ཨ་ནི་་་་བོད་ཀྱི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། སྔ་རབས་ནས་ཨ་ནི་་་དེང་དུས་བར་གྱི་ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་རི་མོའི་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་གཅིག་ཚོགས་ཡས་རེད།

organized a Tibetan...early to contemporary art exhibition.

ཨ་ནི་་་བྱས་ཙང་ངའི་རི་མོ་དེ་ཚོ་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ད་རེས་ཕ་གའི་༿ཕ་གིར་༾ཡ་འདུག་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས༿ནས་༾།

And so these paintings of mine...over there...in this way,

ཨ་ནི་་་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་ལ་ཡ་བོད་ཀྱི་དེང་དུས་ཀྱི་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་ཟེ་བྱས་བྱས་དེ་འདྲས་ཟེ་ཕྱིན་བྱས་གང་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

have been sent to the exhibition, the Tibetan contemporary art exhibition,

ཕྱི་རྒྱལ་མིའི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ད་ང་ཚོའི་ད་ལྟ་བྱས་པའི་དེ་ཚོར་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་ལྟ་སྟངས་ར་༿འདྲ་༾ཅིག་ག་རེ་འདུག

to see what kind of opinion foreigners have about these [works] of ours.

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་ཚོ་ཚང་མ་ལོགས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་སོ་སོའི་བསམ་བློའི་ཐོག་ལ་ཡ་གང་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

And one's own thinking about all of these...

ཕྱིན་ཆད་ལས་ཀ་བྱེད་ཡས་ལ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་ཅིག་བསམ་བློ་བཏང་དགོས་ཡས་དང་།

the need to think about the work going forward and,

ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་མིན་གྱི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ཨ་ནི་་་དེའི་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་བྱས་ཚར་པའི་རྗེས་ལ་ཡ།

aside from that...after the exhibition,

ཨ་ནི་་་ཨོང་དུས་སང་ཨ་ནི་་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། བོད་ལ་ཡ་བསྐྱར་དུ་ང་ཚོ་་་་ང་རའི་༿ང་རང་གི་༾རི་མོ་འདི་ངའི་ཉ་དང་ཅིག་རྒྱུ་ཆ་འདྲ་མི་འདྲས་བཟོས་པའི་དེའི་སྐོར་གྱི་ཨ་ནི་་་འགྲེམས་སྟོན་གཅིག་བྱེད་ཡས་ཀྱི་དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་བསམ་བློ་ཅིག་༿ཞིག་༾ཡོད།

next year...I have plans to do an exhibition again in Tibet on my paintings of fish and different types of materials.

ཨ་ནི་་་འདའི་༿འདིར་༾ག་རེ་ཡིན་པ་༿གང་ཡིན་༾ཟེར་ན་གཙོ་བོ་གི་༿ཡི་༾ད་ལྟ་བ་ཁྱེར་ཡས་བྱས་པ་ཡིན་ན་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

This is because, the main perspective to be brought is...

ཨ་ནི་་་ཕྱི་རྒྱལ་གཅིག་པུ་མ་ཡིན་པའི་ཨ་ནི་་་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་ང་ཚོ་བོད་ཀྱི་དང་ཨ་ནི་་་དེ་མིན་གྱི་རྒྱལ་ནང་གི་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན།

not only [that of] foreigners, but also...Tibetan and aside from that, domestic...

ང་ཚོའི་དེང་དུས་རི་མོ་ཡ་ཨ་ནི་་་ལྟ་སྟངས་ར་༿འདྲ་༾ཅིག་གང་འདྲས་༿གང་འདྲ་༾འདུག

how the perspectives of our contemporary paintings are.

ཨ་ནི་་་ཕྱིན་ཆད་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན། སོ་སོས་ཨ་ནི་་་ག་རེའི་ཐོག་ནས་ག་རེ་རེད་ཟེར་ན་རྩོད་ལེན་བྱེད་དགོས་ཡས་དང་དེ་འདྲས་ལ་ཡ་བསམ་བློ་བཏང་ཡས་ཀྱི་ཨ་ནི་་་བསམ་བློ་རྒྱ་ཆེ་ཙམ་བཏང་ཡས་ཀྱི་དེ་འདྲས་ཀྱི་ཨ་ནི་་་བསམ་བློ་ཞིག་འཁོར་གྱི་འདུག་ཟེ།

And going forward...I think I need to consider what aspects I need to deliberate and to broaden my thinking.
