“The Four Valleys of Bumthang” speaks of the three kinds of dwellings: a hermitage for lamas, a citadel for kings or rulers, and a house for parents. Minduk's version begins with a verse that speaks of Bumthang Dechen in Punakha District as the residence of by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651). Other verses seem to derive from an older version of this song that is no longer extant. In newer versions, besides the reference to Bumthang Dechen and Zhabdrung, the Jokhang in Lhasa is described as the residence of Jowo Shakyamuni, and Lhodrak Kharchu Monastery as the residence of Namkhai Nyinpo. These replace the more common lyrics about the hermitage, citadel and house.
