The elder Bodpa explains the etymology of “Tungkudenpa,” the name of the village where he is from in Zhemgang District. Once upon a time the people of that place used to cultivate a grain known as "Raan" in Khengkha language. This was a type of millet that yielded an extraordinary harvest. Due to the large harvest, a lot of winnowing was required by use of a mortar. Therefore, the place came to be known as “Tungkudenpa,” in which "tungku" derives from the sound of the pestle pounding the grain in the mortar, and "denpa" means "comfortable place."

- བོད་པ་ Bodpaལགས་སོ། དང་ཕུ་གཏུང་སྐུ་གདན་པ་ཟེར་ མིང་བཏགས་དགོ་པའི་དོན་དག་ ག་ཅི་སྨོ་ཟེར་ དཔོན་ཁག་ག་ར་གིས་ འདྲིཝ་མས་ལགས།Thank you! In the past, all the principality asked the reason for naming Tungkudenpa.
- བོད་པ་ Bodpaདེ་འབདཝ་ད་ གཏུང་སྐུ་གདན་པ་ཟེར་མི་འདི་ ལོ་ཐོག་(རཱན་་་་ཁེངས་ཁ་ནང་)(གཡང་རེད་་་་རྫོང་ཁ་ནང)(foxtail millet) བཟའ་མ་ཚར་འཐུང་མ་ཚར་སྦེ་ གནམ་མེད་ས་མེད་ ལེགས་ཏེ་སྡོད་ནུག་ལགས། དེ་འབདཝ་ལས་ གཏུང་སྐུ་ཟེར་ གཡང་རེད་འདི་ མ་ལྷི་ནང་ འདེགས་ཅི་ར་རྡུངས་ཏེ་ བཟའ་བཟའཝ་འབད་ནི་དེ་གིས་ ཕམ་ཚུ་གིས་ གཏུང་སྐུ་གདན་པ་ཟེར་ བཏགས་དགོཔ་སྦེ་ བཀའ་གནང་གནངམ་ཨིན་པས་ལགས། གཏུང་སྐུ་གདན་པ་ཨིན་སྨ་རས་ཟེར།But, Tungkudenpa was a crop called foxtail, that exceeded the fooding and drinks. The crops were grown so well. That is why, so called Tungku or foxtail was put inside the mortal and strike it, then it was consumed and parents ordered to name it Tungkudenpa.
