In the past, the city of Thimphu was popularly known as "Wang," and it was divided into eight major blocks (wang tsho chen gyed), including five blocks that are today under Punakha District. These eight blocks include Chang, Kawang, Kabji, Barb, Toeb, Bjimey, Toedwang, and Medwang, which made up the valley of Wang. But today, the area is called Thimphu, and the major eight blocks of the valley have been separated with only three blocks under Thimphu and five under Punakha District. The five blocks were made part of Punakha District in 2008 as Bhutan progressed with democratic change.
