“Do Not Go East” is structured as a dialogue between a mother and her son. The mother asks her son not go east due to troubles he might face there. The son replies by saying that he has all the means to overcome the troubles. The mother asks her son not to go west due to the frequent rain. The son replies that even though the west is trainy, he will carry an umbrella with him. In other versions, the son says he have a charkap, which is a piece of cloth used to protect from rain that covers one’s back and has its two upper ends folded at the chest. The singer uses the word nyindhug, meaning umbrella, and he uses gunda, a Hindi term for robber and troublemaker instead of jakpa, the Bhutanese term. Due to the incorporation of these new terms, this song can be seen as a good example of how a folk song changes over time due to foreign linguistic influences.
