This video is a narration of a ballad that has two different interpretations pertaining to its origin. The first version claims that the ballad spread during the arrival of the sixth Tali Lama, Rigzin Tshangyang Jamtsho from Tsang in Tibet and its name is གཙང་མོ་ (Daviation of Tsang). While on the other hand, the second version claims that the ballad is sung to seek one's fate by using a thorn, which is why it is named རྩང་མོ་ (Daviation of thorn). In addition, the ballad is sung as a competition between boys and girls to prove their ability and knowledge. Ballads can be of several different subgenres: antagonizing tsangmo, befriending tsangmo, congratulatory tsangmo, deprecating tsangmo, joyful tsangmo, and so on. People compete with each other even while in the field, guarding crops or grazing animals. But these days it is rarely practiced even in the villages. Tsangmo is a type of song used to express one's emotions, conveying inner warmth and affection to another person. Tsangmo songs are only sung but never danced to. It is more like poetry in this regard. The composition is usually limited to a verse of four lines for a particular expression. The tsangmo shown in this video, sang by Sonam Wangmo for archival purposes, is a mixture of all categories. In a real competition, the performer will react to their opponent's verses, whether it be a question or answer.
