“Dew Showree” is a popular greeting song traditionally sung on the eve of the Hindu New Year. The song is meant as worship of the mother of the universe, the cow Gai Tihar, and it is usually performed during the preparations for the New Year festivities. On the Gai Tihar night itself, women visit various households around the village, singing a different greeting song and receiving offerings. On the next day, the eve of the Hindu New Year, men sing Dew Showree. While today this song is a form of entertainment, traditionally it served as a means for poor families to collect money, which would help them to have a proper New Year's celebration the next day.
