The Riphu Lhakhang was built on the mountain revered as the residence of a local deity known as Riphu tsen, a rock spirit. While an exact date of its construction is not known, Thinley tells us that three or four generations have passed since his great-grandfather Lopen Kuenzang built the temple. The locals of Riphu community in Mongar visit this temple in order to worship Riphu tsen as their birth deity. The temple also hosts various religious events for the locals. According to Thinley, the temple's walls are original, while the wooden parts have been renovated over the years and are currently in need for more renovations due to damage caused by the 2009 earthquake.
