Ballads are normally sung and narrated during the construction of traditional Bhutanese houses, since people had to ram mud to build walls over a prolonged period of time. Tshangmo and other songs helped them entertain themselves, and kept their work productive. This particular ballad was sung by the people of Laya and was narrated between men and women. Initially they sung in a befriending manner to please each other, but later the words became a bit harsh, aiming to tease or defame each other. Normally competitors reconcile at the end, but here they stopped short of any compromise, since the occasion was not a competition.
