The monkey year in the Bhutanese calendar is considered as an auspicious year since that was when Guru Rinpoche was born. Dagana district celebrates the monkey year for three days, starting on the 10th day of the 5th month of the Bhutanese calendar. The video fragment shows the first program of the day. It is commonly known as "Atsara Gocham" (clown dance) with the main intent being to invoke good luck, to make sure the rest of the festival will run without obstacles, and to summon local deities as well as the five classes of Dakini (a type of spirit in Vajrayana Buddhism, somewhat comparable to a fairy or imp) for annual offerings. The first program of the day includes a dance in all five directions and also towards the residence of the local deities. After performing this masked dance, other masked dances or different entertainment programs may be performed. The Atsara dance should always by the chief clown known as Atsara Gom and he should be clean from defilements, if not evil occurrences may happen to him.
