The Ache Lhamo Cham dance originated in Tibet. Drupthob Thangtong Gyalpo (1385-1464 or 1361-1485), who is well known in Tibet and Bhutan as the great spiritual master who built many iron bridges, is the creator of this genre of musical drama. In Bhutan Ache Lhamo Cham is only performed in the areas of Merak-Sakteng in Tashigang district and in Lauri in Samdrupjongkhar district. In those places the performance of this cham dance happens annually. The five dancers in the video embody the characters of a god, a serpent, a fisherman, an assistant and king Norzang. The performance begins early in the morning at 5AM and goes until 5PM, with a lunch break in between. The performance in this video is the first part of a fifteen-part footage of an Ache Lhamo dance that took place in Lauri.
