The southern Bhutanese Nepali speaking population has a specific belief system. They live in harmony with the surroundings, the rivers and lakes. They maintain an intimate relationship and attachment to the Isthan site where teen Karniya Devi was believed to be resided. The belief in the Isthan site came into being a long time ago and stopped the sacrificing of animals while seeking blessing from this place. The people come and perform a ritual on this isthan site, when they do not receive rainfall or generally in times of suffering. If they do not perform the ritual, farmers would face an ill fate in the work they do. Whenever one undergoes a harsh situation, people go there to seek blessings to secure their protection and ensure fertility, security and productivity.
