The Lhotshampa people are an ethnic group of Nepalese ancestry in Bhutan. Their caste system is still intact today, hierarchically classifying several hereditary groups. In this video, Lachuman Tahapa from Riserboo in Tsirang gives an account of the origins of the Rai caste of the Lhotshampa. A woman conceived a baby girl, and gave birth to it. After she grew up, the daughter told her mother that she also wanted a daughter. She asked her mother how to become pregnant, and received instructions. The daughter did as she was told, but it soon became obvious that she would not become pregnant in that way. They went searching for a star to be the husband of the daughter. They met an ugly star, but they did not accept him as a husband. They felt frustrated, and decided to go back. On their way home, they reached a place where everything had been dried up from heat. There was no water to drink, and the daughter was so thirsty that she was on the verge of dying. But then, they saw the place where the ugly star had peed, and the daughter drank the star pee. The moment she drank it, she was back to normal and conceived a baby. With that baby the Rai caste originated.

There was nobody, during the time a girl was born. Today they are called Rai. The way this happened was with the father Sky and the mother Earth. One day the two met and the earth conceived.

When the time came, the child was born. Even though she was the only one in the world she managed to grow big. She thought that maybe it was time for her to have her own child as well. But how would she possibly do so without a man, she thought.

Then the girl asked her mother, “How was I born and where is my father?” The mother replied, “One day when I was on my period, I wished to have a child so I took off my clothes and stood where the wind blew. The wind entered my stomach and you were born”. That was the only explanation her mother (earth) gave her.

The girl thought about what her mother said and did the same. However, when she tried to do so the wind refused to come to her. She told her mother, “The wind refuses to come towards me”. The mother replied, “The wind is your father, why would he have sex with you”. The girl was not happy to hear that. She was now confused as to who her child’s father should be as she really wanted a child.

Then when she looked up she saw a good looking star. She called her bird friends and told them “ bring me that star, I want to marry him” and sent them. The star also refused to come and went across the mountains. Then there came another star so the birds told him “we are here to get you to bring you down to the human world for marriage”.

The star replied, “I am not good looking. I even have a goiter on my neck”. Even though the star said that the girl would not like him the birds insisted and said “Whatever it is, we have already taken ransom for this work so you have to come with us” the birds were very persistent and the star ended up going with them. When they reached the girl she said “This is not the star I looked at, he is not good looking, where is the good looking star? ”. So she sent back the ugly star.

The ugly star got mad and left immediately. He thought to himself that firstly they called the wrong person and then when he did decide to go he was treated badly. This made the ugly star mad and thought that he should take revenge. Since he had the power to do so he let the sun shine on forever and this made the trees and water dry up. Everyone found nothing to eat and grew thirsty. The girl eventually fainted.
