This is an account of the Gurung caste andits different sub-castes. Preti Lal Gurung is part of the Pojung sub caste of the Gurung. There are four additional sub-castes under the Pojong: Takrey, Palte, Rashuw and Chamjung. Preti Lal Gurung is a Takrey. Although the four different castes exist as categories, Preti Lal Gurung shares that he has never encountered anyone from the Rashuw sub-caste. So that particular caste may have disappeared. Since these sub-caste belong to the same category of Gurung, intermarriage is strictly probihited as they are considered siblings or relatives. Preti Lal Gurung also shares why they need to raise white sheep.

long before, our ancestors, Grandfather and grandmother lived in the place called faywatal. Grandfather was a hunter and grandmother took care of household chores. And once grandmother had a dream in which fate of the place was foretold and we don’t know what kind of prophecy. In her dream, she was told that this place would be drowned and they must go away. And grandmother made her husband to get up and told him of what she dreamt. She told “lets runaway. The place is going to be drowned!” but grandfather didn’t listened to what she said. He said “this talk of old women is lie. How would she know all about this? This beautiful place will never be drowned” saying this he denied her.

Old women, though her husband didn’t listened to what is said she woke up and ran away. She was all alone running away therefore took a bow, which grandfather used to keep thing for hunting, with her. She went and went and around midnight she fall prey to sickness to give a birth. When this actually happened, she kept bamboo bow there and lying on this she gave a birth to two sons who were named as Ram and Luxman later. And went to another place and settled.

Then this old woman said now all our caste and village is no more existing. Now we have to rear this goat to offer and burn leaves of this tree to make incense offering. Raise white sheep and perform puja and burn inscense of this rudu tree said old women.
After someday she thought, I have left my husband behind and I was told the place will be drowned. This made her go to the place to inspect. When she arrived she saw all drowned. Nothing was left, their land and all. All became water pond. On the top of peak which wasn’t drowned there was a tree. We call this tree Rudu. On this tree there was a white sheep. Otherwise all were drowned.

And at midnight sons were born and there was no weapon to cut umbilical cord. No friend was there too. So the navel/umbilical cord was cut with help of nail. Therefore, since Sakha Gotara is no more existing and it stands to be extinct, now your type or gotara is Atara gotara because that bamboo was of atara bamboo and we are of Madheni Sakha, meaning our ancestors were born at midnight.

We are also called nesnal. It is combination of Faytall Futcha and nala-gari Nal. Because of having cut the umbilical cord with nail it is nala gari nall. And meaning of faywatal futcha is before we lived in place faywatal and later it is being drowned. Therefore, we belonging to pojung sub-c aste must rear sheep of white color. Otherwise one should rear sheep of complete black. So it is must to have of one color in sheep.

We should rear this sheep for three years. We shood not use the wool but has to wash and feed for three years. And in the month of November or april, before Buddha-Purnima and chand Purnima we should make offering. When we are making offering/ while performing ritual, the sheep reared for three years will be big enough by then. We should perform ritual and make fire offering by burning Ruda tree leaf and then we sacrifice sheep and eat.

After that, Pojung again is four different types. May be they were of sons of those grandfather and grandmother. And we are Takrey, Palte, rashuw and chamjung. We are of four brothers. We belonging to these types cannot have intermarriage. Eldest one is called Takrey, followed by Palte, Rashuw and Chamjung. Among these four, we don’t find Rashuw and I am of Palte. I didn’t see and heard of Rashuw existing. Three of us are existing.
This is how Pojung Sub-caste came to existence.
