Aum Jomo and Tshering, collectively known as Jomo Tshering, are the main deities worshipped annually on the 22nd day of the ninth month of the Bhutanese calendar. It is said that the great yogi Jetsun Milarepa made Aum Jomo and Tshering his consorts when he was meditating at the Jomolhari Mountain. The place has since become a pilgrimage center known as Jomolhari Ne. Lopon Tshering, the former caretaker of the local temple in Jomolhari Ne, says that Gyelwa Lorepa, a great Buddhist saint, founded this temple when he travelled to Bhutan. On his journey to Bhutan, Gyelwa Lorepa is believed to have sent his yak ahead of him, after instructing it to find a place to rest that would be suitable for him to build his hermitage. When the yak reached the base of Jomolhari Mountain, it could not proceed any further and rested there. Milarepa then built the temple at that place.
