These are the proceedings of a typical consecration ceremony recorded in a rural community of Shumar. Two of the main stages of the consecration ritual are depicted. The first is an exorcism ritual in which masked wrathful heroes hold fire torches and dance to drive the evils out of the house and away from the surroundings. The second is the ritual circumambulation of the house by people carrying relics and five phalluses. In some traditions, the smallest of the phalluses should be carried by the mistress of the house, and later be hung over the main door. The other four should be hung at the four corners of the house’s eaves.
